"Quick Change Artist" On the Loose; Tries to Pass Rolled Pennies as Dimes

Posted Tuesday, August 19, 2008 ; 06:57 PM

Incident happened at Ohio Valley Mall CVS pharmacy.
Story by D.K. Wright

ST. CLAIRSVILLE, Ohio -- Belmont County authorities
are on the trail of an alleged "quick change artist."

The man walked into the CVS pharmacy at the Ohio
Valley Mall Monday night, with five rolls of coins
in dime wrappers.

He asked for $50 in paper money, in exchange for
what he claimed was $50 in dimes.

According to Belmont County Sheriff Fred Thompson,
the clerk checked the rolls and found they were all
filled with pennies. Then he allegedly said he was
an undercover police officer and said he did that
to catch possible criminals.

Deputies are now trying to get the store's
surveillance video.

The trick is not to trade pennies in dime rolls, but to ask for penny
rolls, and when they open the till, tell them you want the blue wrapper
rolls, or green, etc. -- anything but the red.

Hello

On your posting below.

I would really like to know how these pennies
were wrapped. The story does not not give me
enough informaiton on the scam.

To pass off rolled pennies as dimes, it has to
be package in a (green colored) flat coin
wrapper, or shotgun coin wrapper.

color standards on coin wrappers are as followed:
Red - Penny
Blue - Nickel
Green - Dime

There is also the problem with the size of a
dime and penny. The penny is much larger. See
the specifications link below.

http://www.usmint.gov/about_the_mint...specifications

The scammer could have used thick green paper
cut-and-shape to penny size roll, and marked as
"ten dollars" dime rolls.

Translation please?

In simpler terms, you don't pass off something for what it is not, as
the suspect allegedly did in trying to pass off rolls of pennies for
rolls or dimes, instead you want to try to capitalize on the potential
ignorance of a teller, who doesn't know the difference between a cent
roll that you are asking for, usually in a red wrapper, and a nickel or
dime roll, which are usually other colors but similar in size.
I'm joking, of course.

Many coin rolls delivered to stores these days are clear plastic, so
you can see the coins. There is no writing on the clear wrappers to
indicate denomination or totoal amouont in rolls. Cashiers must know
how much is in a standard roll of each denomination and know what they
look like.

Dimes come in $5 rolls, so 5 rolls of dimes would be $25, not $50.
This entire report seems suspect.

Yes, they must but often don't.
Besides, it's a psychological game. they mess with your head. We lost $100+
to a quick change artist. They call them artists for a reason.
