Default 1954 Encyclopedia Britannica Value

Can anyone give me some information about the worth of my 1954
Encyclopedia Britannica 23 volume set? It's almost never been used,
and is in good shape. If you can give me any leads on how much it's
worth (or where I can get this information) it would be greatly
appreciated.

Goto Ebay http://books.ebay.com and search for
encyclopedia britannica
When you get the results there will be a small box
"Completed listings" which you check and search again.

You will see that sets like yours sell for practically nothing or
don't sell at all.

Donate it.

While I'm sure that somewhere there is a collector who would covet this
item, your best bet would be to find out what day your town picks up paper
for recycling and leave them out by the curb then.

If you have a local charity thrift store, they may accept
it as a donation, if you throw some money in with the
deal.

Donate it to the library, so they can use it to raise money at their
next library sale. They might sell it for $30-$50. I don't know why
anyone buys it, but I have to say, I fished a 1947 edition of Grolier's
Encyclopedia out of a dumpster about 15 years ago and have found it quite
useful, even though it is obviously obsolete. It has saved me from having
to buy an encyclopedia and the things it isn't useful for in a pinch I
can either usually find on the net or at the library, where they have
contemporary encyclopedias.

Why do you want to get rid of it?

You found someone to take an old encyclopedia set off your
hands? Wow! Around here, you have to outsmart the thrift
stores. First you put on a disguise, pack the books up in a
plain cardboard box, then leave the box at the back door of a
thrift store.....at midnight (and hope they don't have a security
camera, or they can charge you with "littering").
They're basically in the category of "everyone has (or had) one
and doesn't need another" (like National Geographics and
Readers Digest compilations).
