"Neither snow nor rain nor heat nor gloom of night stays
these couriers from the swift completion of their appointed rounds"
is often cited as the motto for the U.S. Postal motto.

possibly taken from the Greek historian Herodotus (c484-425bc) in his
"histories"
organised by Cyrus the Great, ruler of the Persian Empire, in 539 BC.

'Nothing is more expeditious than the method of transmitting messages,
invented and used by the Persians. Along each route, at regular intervals
equal to one day's journey, were relays of men and horses, housed in
stations specially set up for the purpose. Snow, rain, cold or darkness
could not prevent the messengers carrying on their work with the greatest
speed. The first man to arrive passed the despatches to the second, who then
passed them on to a third, and so on, until the despatches arrived at their
destination ... In the Persian language these relays were known as
angareion.'
acknowledgement: James Mackay.
