Default Weird 1940 nickel

This was submitted to a magazine I suscribe too (see pic below), the
guy said he got this 1940 Nickel from his mother and wanted to know the
signifigance of the 3 radials above Monticello. He asked several coin
dealers, but none knew what they were. I also couldn't find anything on
this online or in any of my coin books. The only thing I can think of
is it's some kind of Fraternal organazation's markings, as I have some
pennies from Littleton with weird markings I ordered several years ago

Are those markings raised on the surface? It looks that way in the pic.

Yeah it sure does. But the coloring of the coin is odd; I wonder if
it's real.

Sure looks raised to me too. I wonder if somebody at the mint took an ice
pick or something and scribed those into the die?

I agree on the color. Seems off but it could just be the scan.

That looks like a 'flagpole' error--or more like this one has 3 flagpoles.
Jeffersons from '38 on up to about the late '40's were prone to getting
larger die breaks like that due to them still not quite sure how to strike
nickel content coins without ruining massive amounts of dies in the
process--but this one is highly unusual. ??? Could be wrong. They usually
don't look as immense as those so I have doubts. You might try this site
here and see what they say--
