Default USPS vs Economy #2

Three years ago USPS was operating in the black.
According to May 20th report from USPS the first quarter loss was 2
Billion and is expected to continue.
There was a 32 billion piece decline since FY2007 and a 12 Billion
drop in rervenue.
Cost cutting is going on everywhere. 44,000 employees are leaving
service and will not be replaced.
Five day mail delivery is being considered.
Acutally cost cutting began a few years back when all the roadside
mail boxes were removed. Security was the reason USPS cited.
I do not know if USPS made any money with all the "junk" stuff they
were selling in the postal stores like stationary, stamp pins, mounted
FDCs and the like. Certainly the postal stores were a flop.

And they would *still* be in the black if they didn't have to pay huge
amounts into a Congress-controlled retirement fund for their
employees. Two things: while it's nice to have a pension (I have one)
companies worldwide are cutting back on this. And, secondly, maybe
the U.S. Congress should not be the entity deciding and controlling
this. Either have them be a private company, or have them be a public
service. This bit about half-devolving them is for the birds.

(By the way, my vote: the US government should control the whole
thing. A well-functioning postal service is essential to the well-
being and unity of any nation, especially a large nation.)
