Collecting books

I must confess I didn't have anything particular to say today, but I
was upset when I opened the site, and saw nothing but filth on the
main page. You can hit the "report spam" button all you like, but
Google will never take it down.

If only we had more active members, we would of course be filling
these pages with our own postings, and this crap would quickly vanish
under the weight of real discussions.

1) This isn't "google groups." This is Usenet. Google's interface to
Usenet makes it LOOK like every group originates from Google, but Usenet
existed long before Google -- long before the World Wide Web itself.
Reporting SPAM will work only for actual Google groups (if at all); it
won't work on classic Usenet groups.

2) This group used to be a very active medium for the exchange of
information on book collecting; those days ended at least five years ago.

It's very sad, but there you are.

I agree. This once was quite active and I have posted similar posts to yours
at the rate of once a year and you would be surprised how many peopl still
read th posts when they are made.

One thing I find particularly hard even with the Internet is finding the
exact points for identifying recent books ie something will be published and
come on my radar, lets say for winning a Booker, and you start looking
through various shops and sites and it can be hard sometimes to be sure
whether you are getting a bargain or a later printing of the first (despite
what the seller states)

I freely admit to being vague about the distinction between Usenet and
Google groups. On whichever platform I view this forum, there are
links inviting me to "report as spam" offensive postings. As far as I
can see, nothing is ever done about such reports. Does anyone know who
puts the links there, and why? ("He only does it to annoy, because he
knows it teases...")

Have the people gone somwhere else, or is there just less interest in
collecting? I know all the bookfairs I go to are gradually getting
smaller, year by year.

Oh I think people are still book collecting but the internet is now the
preferred medium of acquisition.
I can't even remember the last time I went to the local book fair.
I do remember that the dealers were generally rude and irascible and the prices
high.
It was always the same dealers and pretty much the same books year after year

When I went to the book fair in Seattle last fall, I saw an item that
I would have liked, but the price was more ($125) than I was willing
to pay. (Just my frame of mind--no judgment on the value of the book
or him.)

I noted that the dealer lived in NYC, as I do, and thought I might see
him, and it, again locally...perhaps at a lesser price. I've seen him
at two more fairs, at least, since then, and he still has the book,
and it's still the same price.

Hiow long, I wonder, will he carry it in his stock before he marks it
down?

Yo, show some respect to those who collect filth. Why do you
think some books are described as "soiled"?

I bought the book on Sunday.

I saw it when I first passed through the dealer's booth, and walked
around trying to decide if I should go for it. (I'm getting a nice tax
refund, and I *can* afford it.). Having examined all the other booths
at the fair, I went back to look at this item one last time. Just
then, a young woman picked up "my" book! I couldn't hear what she said
to the seller, but I heard him say she could have it for $100.
Apparently, this wasn't good enough for her, and she put it back.
Having almost had it bought under my nose, I was already counting the
money out.

Not only did I get a $25 discount, but he ate the tax; that seemed a
pretty generous reduction to me.
