But in light of the unarticulated definition you responded to, it must be Original Toning. ;-/ Alan 'paradigm shift: third to fourth and found 20¢ in the boot' |

wrote: Hmm, so if I take my 2003 SAE and throw it in the oven for a few seconds the toning is original? Yes. But it's not natural. Look, this isn't difficult. If a seller describes an old coin as having "original toning," buyers and would-be buyers regard this as meaning that the coin hasn't been cleaned and that the toning on it has resulted from the natural process of the metal on the coin's reacting to its environment without a deliberate attempt on the part of humans to induce these chemical changes. When a coin has been cleaned, among the things removed from its surfaces are original toning. The seller in the case of the coin discussed in the opening post of this thread made the ridiculous assertion in his auction description that this harshly cleaned coin had original toning. -- Coin Collecting: Consumer Guide: http://rg.ancients.info/guide Glomming: Coin Connoisseurship: http://rg.ancients.info/glom Bogos: Counterfeit Coins: http://rg.ancients.info/bogos |
