Usenet: They hardly knew yee

Blowhard Goldsborough has threatened to leave countless times but like a dog to his vomit, he keeps coming back. Apparently he can't find any other place where anyone will listen to him bloviate ad nauseum. I recently cleaned out my killfile to see if I was missing anything of interest and he popped up again, only to be quickly KF'd again. And tell us again, Finnan, why you have changed your name yet again to evade OUR killfiles?? |

I don't believe it has anything to do specifically with the RCC.
I think it's simply "burn-out." The Internet has given us too much, too fast, and too easily. http://www.investopedia.com/terms/l/...ingutility.asp "Reid Goldsborough" wrote in message ... Ever more ISPs are dropping their complimentary Usenet subscriptions. And people seem increasingly getting fed up with the ever greater encroachment of the rabble-rousing rabble, disrupting for disruption's sake, the look at me types, a worsening of a long trend made possible by Usenet's wonderful freedom, its flip side. But the paltry number of posts per day in RCC these days, what, about five a day on average, the lowest I've ever seen, is mostly the fault of those who have left. Where have they gone? I miss some, not others. Short list of the AWOL with a little help from Google Groups: * Barry Kutner -- local show buddy who got fed up with the dark side of numismatics, not just RCC * John Carney -- another local show buddy who may be sailing around the world right now, maybe looking for sunken treasure, maybe not * Fred A. Murphy -- old-time collector/dealer of lots of things who knew lots about the coin business * Stujoe -- off running his CoinPeople site, or is it now the Stujoe Collection? or both? * Phil DeMayo -- getting his law degree no doubt * Alan Williams -- too many rolls of 2009 cents from the bank to go through * Eric Tillery -- health problems? * Steven Preston -- good doc with justifiably bad temper and lots of Morgans and insights * R.W. Julian -- bona fide numismatist and uber knowledgeable guy off to less tempestuous waters * Tom DeLorey -- another numismatist who appears to have been put off the by increasing rough and tumble * Alan Herbert -- yet another numismatist who no longer dares to come here * A.Gent -- was anything but and changed his handle later * Larry Calder -- off to a better place than this life Lots of others too. Changing (Internet) world. More splintered, as with television. Still lots of community, but you sometimes have to look harder. -- Consumer: http://rg.ancients.info/guide Connoisseur: http://rg.ancients.info/glom Counterfeit: http://rg.ancients.info/bogos |

And tell us again, Finnan, why you have changed your name yet again to evade OUR killfiles?? I see "Bob F." says "Fwankie" all the time. Is he the same person who did this before under a different handle every time or seemingly every time you posted? Weirdness, truly. Usenet weirdness. At least Bruce Remick uses his real name, though he's posting now like he's senile, saying one thing and saying he said another and making no sense whatsoever, so it might actually be in his interest to start using an anonymous handle as well. I guess it's my fault because I must have never road a bicycle around my neighborhood as a kid. He said so! And for some weird reason wants me to talk about this. No problem. I did ride a bike as a kid, one of which, maybe the last of which, was an "English Racer." OK? Sure, I said "Bye" to him, but his goading is just too appealing for me to resist. Anyway, interesting subject, I think, the evolution (and devolution) of Usenet. People left some interesting comments, insightful (not just a "simple point" -- LOL). But it was inevitable I guess that the thread would devolve into flames given how much this has played a part in Usenet's degeneration. -- Consumer: http://rg.ancients.info/guide Connoisseur: http://rg.ancients.info/glom Counterfeit: http://rg.ancients.info/bogos |

So what have you found that I said and later retracted that causes you such grief? I find it telling when a person criticizes another to the group instead of to that person directly. Are you again offering your psychological analysis of me and others as you so often seem to do? And I see you have STILL never gone back to read the original remark I made about the bicycle and the hose, along with its context, yet you seem continue to enjoy commenting on it as if you knew what you were talking about. Makes one wonder if this reflects the thoroughness of your research in other areas. You'd make a good politician in that regard. |

The problem of Usenet nuts has gotten so severe that I've had to adopt a policy of no longer offering my psychoanalytical services pro bono. I'm really sorry about this, but there's only so much time in a day. If you're still interested, contact me privately and I'll tell you what my rates are. I should point out that I offer a sliding scale, so if you're all tapped out because of buying so many coins lately you may still find this doable. -- Consumer: http://rg.ancients.info/guide Connoisseur: http://rg.ancients.info/glom Counterfeit: http://rg.ancients.info/bogos |

James This month Finnan is lid, last month he was lid Both fake AND constantly changing IDs to circumvent killfiles. Although you have not ever changed your email (that I know of), you have recently taken to only posting under your first name. When I see "Frank" as a screen name, I don't know which Frank I am about to read. Likewise, there are many Bobs on RCC, some who post regularly, others who post rarely. You, I, and everyone else here make a decision each and every time we encounter a posting. Over time we learn which ones to leave be and which ones may yield desirable information. A guy can get burned even when he is careful about this. As far as killfiles are concerned, it doesn't seem to me much of an imposition to plonk someone once a month. In Outlook Express it takes about 5 seconds. If I am offended by someone's postings, but still open them, even when I am pretty sure that evil lurks there, then whose fault is it when I get flamed?
