Fake coins question
Hi
I do collect world coins but I am on the low end of the hobby. I collect circulated coins mostly and a few commemorative here and there up to $10 US dollars and on a few occasions some up to $20. I shouldn't be much of a victim in the price range that I collect but still I am wondering which coins beside the obvious Chinese ones are usually counterfeited worldwide? What to be careful of? Thanks Patrick |

Thanks Patrick Under $20, the only thing to be really careful of is the current British one pound coin. These have been counterfeited extensively, but to deceive merchants, not collectors. Generally speaking, the higher the numismatic value, the more likely you are to encounter a fake. For example, virtually all of the coins from Gold Coast being offered today are fake. Likewise Norwegian speciedalers and their fractions, Italian 5-lire crowns, 2-, 5-, and 10-gulden coins of Danzig, and coins from Armavir. But this doesn't even scratch the surface. And it makes a big difference where you buy your coins. Without writing a book, that's the best I can do. James |

As I said before, in my price range not much to worry about. Thanks again Patrick |
