Default Currency Conversion Fee!....?

Last year I was winning bidder for a high grade English silver coin for
my type set. When I emailed the seller for the total shipping fees he
tacked on a CCF of $1.50! I asked him how come he didn't mention this in
his auction discription, he replied that he just assumed everyone knew
he woud be asking for it! I have never had any other seller in England
or the few other foreign countrys I have purchased from ask me for this.
I just let him cancel the sale because I didn't feel like hasseling with
it for a common coin. Any body else have foreign sellers try this
nonsense? Bernie.

And $1.50 is cheap. I've seen UK sellers charge up to $US8 to accept a
US check. You probably couldn't convert your dollars to pounds for a
buck and a half in the US!

I have somewhere a check for US$ 12.50. I never did cash it in because the
amount I have to pay for cashing it is approximately equal to the amount the
check is worth.

No. But it makes sense for him to do that. Unless you offered to send
him sterling cash or a US money order in sterling, he has every right
to have you pay for the conversion at his end, since your US$ check or
US cash won't get very far in the UK.

I agree with you though that he SHOULD have mentioned this fee in his
description. A minor slip, really, that could have been solved to
everyone's satisfaction with a little understanding.

Padraic.

Let me add that if the seller had accepted PayPal and you decided to
go that route to get around his CCF....you'd lose. PayPal also charges
a currency conversion fee.

The Royal Bank of Scotland charges me £5 to bank a non UK cheque but I asked
bidders to contact me before bidding if they are going to pay by non UK
cheque so that they can be advised of this extra cost before bidding.

I used to mention it in the auction description but I started to get
messages from ebay saying that I had breached one of their rules, I presume
some automatic checker had picked up on the bit where I asked for extra
payment. Billy
