Banning cigarettes is not the answer, it would only lead to illegal
activity (remember prohibition).
Education, a total ban on advertising, forcing manufacturers to
package their cancer sticks in plain white boxes, higher (say $20 a
pack) taxes, publically funded smoking cessation programs, cracking
down on illegal off-shore and Indian smoke sales are all required to
end the plague of smoking in the US of A.

So you would have the US crack down on [say] French sales of tobacco as
well?

I don't care if the French all get cancer and die.
But if they want to sell ciggies here, they've got to pay the tax!

If we were to stop Native American tobacco trade we may have another
Wounded Knee on our hands. This time, however, the Native Americans
may be much more heavily armed.

Prohibition didn't work. I don't believe it was very well thought
out. This may be the issue with marijuana and a secondary social
"drug", next to alcohol. Cigarettes are also containing a stimulant,
but that is traditionally and socially acceptable on some levels,
otherwise there wouldn't be any on the market. The revenue from
tobacco is huge.

The motivation is definitely political - the anti-smoking groups finally got
enough POLITICAL clout to force the actions!

There is nearly nothing that happens without a political overtone, in the US
anyway!

Darn lobbyists, doggone it!

Just in case some people have forgotten, laws are generally passed
because people need to be protected from themselves.

White man must stop red brother from selling untaxed cigarettes.
If red brother not agree, white father in Washington will send many
soldiers with firesticks.

Not a chance of the " many soldiers with firesticks." .. " white
father in Washington " is still giving " red brother " whatever the
hell he wants to repay for taking the " red brother's " land many
years back" red brother " pays no taxes and when he gets new land
returned it becomes a Indian Reservation again and the " red man "
builds a tobacco selling outlet that sells cigarettes made by the "
white man."" red man " also builds a casino next to the smoke shop.
I do not speak with forked toungue, we got one here, and they own all
the Hard Rock in the world.

Those 'laws' are passed because SOME people think THEY know what's BEST for
the rest ...

I don't need to be 'protected' from myself. I'm an adult and should have the
FREEEDOM to make my own decisions, IF I'm also willing to live with the
consequences of such decisions.

Therein lies the POLTICAL nature of these laws, too many, after they get in
a jam, cry HELP! and expect the rest to come running and fix everything with
a pat and a kiss on the forehead.

The more laws, the less freedom !!!

Yes... and when was the last time George Bush paid you a visit? I
have yet to have politicians knocking, although I have received
political snail mail responses to petitions sent.

They know what's happening in Main Street USA alright. Just not our
respective Main Streets.

Not only that, but 'white father' has found out that he's created a monster
- soverign nation status!

He does not have any control except how fast he wimples and givee even more
to their demands!

offender.
