Default Rowe R-83 selection problem

I have a Rowe R-83 that frequently plays a different record than the one
selected. When this happens, it always the next higher number i.e..: I
select record #120 it plays record #121 but the "selection playing"
indicator shows #120. It seems to be a random problem, sometimes playing one
or several wrong then suddenly playing one or several correctly. Does
anyone have any suggestions as to what may be the problem??

Thanks!!

Jim

2 things

the encoder wheel wiper assembly isnt adjusted properly, and needs to
be realigned, or the wiper pressure isnt enough.

The encoder wheel isnt timed correctly to the record rack gear and
needs realigning. (this is less likely but still possible)

Refer to the service manual for the correct procedures

It might also need pull-up resistors on the 9 or 10 lines that run to
the memory unit from the wipers (for memory a 10k connected from each
wiper to -17v was sufficient.
