Switching from paper to metal is about reducing overhead costs.
Nothing to do with the need or usefulness of the do nomination.

Correct. That's probably why we haven't done it.

Correct for whom, the entity that directly pays
for the dollar bill is the FRB, and it is low cost, maybe
5 cents at most.

Correct in that any switch from paper to metal would be about cost reduction
and not about whether the metal (dollar) coin is needed or considered more
useful by the public. The public has already weighed in on that one.

If the FRB had to buy all dollar coins this year,
they would have to pay the mint face value.

The mint can't very well mint dollar coins if
nobody orders any, and anybody can order them,
so apparently not many people want any.

I suspect we feel the same way here, but I'm not really sure.

Personally, I am willing to pay for the dollar
bills I wear out, just to avoid being told what I must
do, which is a subtle way to preserve a little
freedom in a country that is moving toward the
horrors of socialism in the name of Federalism.

Since two-thirds of US currency is overseas,
there must be about a Billion people worldwide
that prefer the dollar, or gain some benefit from
using it.

Now I do believe we share the same opinion.

I suspect much of the cost of printing dollar
bills is gained back because not all of them will
ever go back to the FRB.
With energy costs going up, transporting
tons of metal back and forth could cost more
than printing the paper note. In a country
that doesn't have a large dispersed population,
recirculation transportation is less of a cost
problem.
I have no idea how a little bank 800 miles
from a FRB branch would be able to afford to
pay for delivery of dollar coins.

Default "Real" Money

OK, this looks like fun! Let me help stir things up a little. Keep in
mind that I am being totally satirical.

Indeed. I rarely respond to this type of hoho, but variety is
the spice of life.

What cars originally made in England are currently made elsewhere? A
few that come to
mind right away are Rolls Royce, Aston Martin, Jaguar.

Not sure of the point of that one.

How much money is 'wasted' on maintaining the royals?

Much less than their estates bring in to the government.
And furthermore, I am sure that the US President costs
the US government money too. Her Majesty has been head of state
for over 50 years, providing a continuity that 4 or 8 years does not provide.

How good is your German, the language you would be speaking if not for
the USA?

False argument. The French did not all speak German during the Occupation.

Why did it take so long for the £/S/d system to disappear, and become
a more functional decimal system?

There was nothing disfunctional about it, other than that the penny was
too large for its value. Interestingly, computers now would have no
trouble whatsoever coping with the £sd system (and one could argue
that if we had retained it the population as a whole might be
better at mental arithmetic... :-)

And my favorite-Q: Why do the Brits like their beer warm? A: Because
Lucas makes their refrigerators too.

Because you can taste it! Why anaesthatise your taste buds :-)

The other reason is cultural. We have an amazingly different culture
over here compared with the US, despite the use of approximately
the same language.

Cheers!

Default Coins from Greece, was "Real" Money

In a recent message MDB wrote:

Hi,

A lot of the Greek coins I have seen all tend to be quite high in value.
Why is this? When I was in Athens last October I passed a guy who had a
stall and he had all kinds of coins. Unfortunately, the price tags were
not in my budget (I had Ouzo to buy!). I would like to get some higher
grade silver Greek coins buy when I see them in Auction catalogues they
are in lots and don't carry images unless they are high value ones so
you don't really know what you are bidding on. I don't buy through Ebay
these days.

Do you know of any online coin shops that list Greek coins with images?
Also, do you know any coin shops in Athens that I could visit on my next
trip? I am hoping to go back at Christmas.

Don't the Greeks have laws prohibiting the export of Greek coins?
Or are you after modern stuff?

Yes they do.
If they are of high value.
But if they are common, low value old coins you can export them.
I am not sure if required but I would take an export permit from the
National Museum before going to the airport...

Or are you after modern stuff?

I think that was what he was referring to.
