gordon: ======== A Thin ============= Often a stamp which has been improperly hinged will be damaged when the hinge is removed. A layer of paper fibers under the hinge gum is torn away leaving the paper of the stamp thin in the area. Such thins are defects and should be mentioned when describing a stamp. The effect on value will depend on the size of the thin. Blair Stannard I understood that it would be a thin if there was a variation in the colour of the stamp when held up to a strong light. However on reading this I may be wrong. Alan |

weren't you thinking of 'thin paper' where the overall thickness of the stamp is concerned, not just the thickness at a particular fragment. What would be 'thin paper' is another discussion. Some Israeli definitives have been called on 'thin paper' where the only difference was the flexibility [how easy to bend] as both types of stamps measured 0.100 mm groetjes, Rein On 29 Jan 2005 19:43:07 , Alan wrote: Often a stamp which has been improperly hinged will be damaged when the hinge is removed. Alan Holding the stsmp to the light is a good way to locate a 'thin, not because of its coloring but because the thinnier area of the paper will let more light thru the paper so it stands out. |
