Question for e-Bay sellers and not only!
Question for e-Bay sellers and not only!
Today I received (like many of you I suppose) an order form from San Marino for their 2 Scudi gold coin (Nostradamus) and the Gold Set of 2 coins "Giotto". They are priced 105 euros the first and 370 euros the set. I am not collecting those coins and I don't sell coins but for the first time in my life I had a "mean" idea: to try and make some money from those gold coins:-) So my question is this: - are those coins "rare"? I mean, the previous similar emissions were rare or not? - are they going to gain in value or if I buy them I'll be forced to sell them with a small (or no...) premium? - and if they are going to gain value, how soon it will happen? - am I considered a bad and greedy person, if for the first time in my life I am trying to make some profit from coins? Thank you! -- E' mai possibile, oh porco di un cane, che le avventure in codesto reame debban risolversi tutte con grandi puttane! F.d.A |

... As for your last question, "am I considered a bad and greedy person ... trying to make some profit from coins?", the answer is NO! (Have you consider the opposite? "Am I a good person for losing money on my coins?") Well, I don't think that I am loosing money as I collect for hobby and not for profit:-) I must confess though that I have some remorse in having such thoughts (buying with the solely purpose of selling):-) -- E' mai possibile, oh porco di un cane, che le avventure in codesto reame debban risolversi tutte con grandi puttane! This is a throwback to their previous currency! The way I read the instructions, I got mine today also, you have to have ordered the set last year to qualify to order this set. So unless you ordered it last year, I am guessing you cannot order it this year? I ordered the 8 coin Euro set last year, and sold it for $200.00 more than I paid for it, but I needed the money, I was still paying for a long trip in Ukraine in 9/01. Dave Parrish |

Don't be that harsh ;-) San Marino issued those scudo/scudi gold coins when the country's currency was the lira, and it issues them now that the country uses the euro: | This Agreement does not prejudge the right of the Republic of San | Marino to continue issuing gold coins denominated in scudi. http://europa.eu.int/comm/economy_fi...coins_notes/do ssier30.pdf Cannot really comment on gogu's question whether the price of these pieces is expected to go up. Of course some will think he is a bad and greedy person if he buys the scudi pieces with the intention of not keeping them. So? Some people also believe that coin dealers are mean villains because they sell coins at a higher price than the original issue price g. Christian |

Well, Christian, I consider myself a honest person and conscience is something that still matters to me:-) Call me naive or old fashioned but this is how I see things:-) So even if even one person will say that it is not good what I thought to do, I will never proceed with this! Honestly! Some people also believe that coin dealers are mean villains because they sell coins at a higher price than the original issue price g. This is absurd!A dealer is a person who is doing this for living, like every other merchant! So it's obvious that he must have a profit! rgrds -- E' mai possibile, oh porco di un cane, che le avventure in codesto reame debban risolversi tutte con grandi puttane! F.d.A Christian |

Okay this was interesting, they are denominating the coins in Scudi, not Euros. Errrr ... the 2 coins in the set are 20 and 50 euros:-) The scudo was not their pre-euro currency. They were using Italian liras. This is a throwback to their previous currency! The way I read the instructions, I got mine today also, you have to have ordered the set last year to qualify to order this set. So unless you ordered it last year, I am guessing you cannot order it this year? That's what they say but I believe that if they've mailed you the order form you have many chances to receive them even if you haven't ordered the last year's gold coins. Just my two euro cents though... I ordered the 8 coin Euro set last year, and sold it for $200.00 more than I paid for it, I am still holding my 2003 set:-) Have you any idea what is the price for it on eBay right now? but I needed the money, I was still paying for a long trip in Ukraine in 9/01. :-) I was there earlier this year! Nice country, nice people! So, what about my main question? What do you think? Are those 3 coins going up or the profit will be marginal or even null? rgrds -- E' mai possibile, oh porco di un cane, che le avventure in codesto reame debban risolversi tutte con grandi puttane! You buy them from a mint or numismatic office and offer them for sale. People will then pay you what they are willing to pay. I do not "ebay" myself, but more than time I ordered two coins/sets while I wanted only one, and then swapped my excess pieces. Well, that was also based on "market values" to some extent. Nothing wrong with that IMO. On the other hand, last year I had ordered the German €100 and 200 gold coins from the German Numismatic Office, and due to the overwhelming demand got the 100 piece only. So far I have not bought the other one from a third party because the current prices are too high from my point of view. But would I call any of the sellers dishonest or immoral? Of course not :-) Christian |
