2006 Silver Proof Sets Arrived
Cliff wrote: .... I believe my biggest mistake in all this was spending so much time accumulating material things instead of spending time with the ones I love and now realize that every minute I missed spending with them in pursuit of someting else is a minute I'll never get to spend with them again. .... You're not alone, I know. Many people (myself included) start out as a collector, but end up hoarding. The safe gets full and overflows to the closet. This isn't bad, however, when it comes time to sell. The nice thing about coins is that if one doesn't pay too much for them, they are a good investment. I have to admit that I've never spent so much time on a collection that it took me away from family. My days are long, so there always seem to be time for most things I want to do. Anita |

Many collectors even forget what they have in the collection. Anita I guess I would qualify as a "used to be" collector. My dad died in January of this year and in his will I got his coins. The interesting thing is that all his coins, with just a few exceptions, were coins that I had given him over the years. Buffalo dollars, proof sets, gold soverigns and stuff like that. It meant something to me but I found that he just stuck it in a box and probably never looked at it again after I gave it to him. Since it meant nothing to him, it has made me relook at how and why I collect stuff. It's kind of like having an OCD disorder or something like that, the drive to accumulate and collect. I looked at all that I had collected, be it coins, stamps, baseball cards, comics, trains, guns, etc, etc, etc and realized that the drive was in getting the item, either because it caught my eye or was something I was after at the time. Now I realize that it really didn't matter why, I have a ton of stuff and it really doesn't mean anything to me. So, I made the decision to stop collecting, rid myself of a ton of stuff and maybe someone else who becomes a collector will enjoy it now that I know there is no longer any joy in any of it for me. You'll probably see me still bid on this and that, sometimes it's a compulsion I can't over come and when I win, whatever it is will ldisappear on my desk for a while and then come back out, I'll wonder why I have it and away it will go. I believe my biggest mistake in all this was spending so much time accumulating material things instead of spending time with the ones I love and now realize that every minute I missed spending with them in pursuit of someting else is a minute I'll never get to spend with them again. The family gets smaller as the years go by. Cliff My Dad died about a month ago but I live a long way away and didn't get to see him much in the last 10 years. That didn't make it any easier and I did re-examine my priorities. My collection doesn't really take any time away from my family as my family is mostly scattered here and there and not near. Nothing I can do about that. I collect stuff and find my biggest interest and thrill in finding, acquiring and learning about it. I get a coin, put it in my album or notebook and rarely look at it again ever, except maybe to make a list. I get satisfaction from completing those list too when that rarely happens. So for me it is the hunt and whatever research I do to discover all I can about the item. Owning it after that has little interest for me and every few to a half dozen years I sell off a bunch of stuff and explore other areas. I get a lot of satisfaction from that and don't plan on quitting. It is my education which never stops. My ignorance knows no bounds :-) Dale |

My numismatic interests are varied enough that while I have little interest in my new Mint sets and commems after I store them away, I can pull out my Hard Times, CW, and Conder tokens and history seems to come alive for me. I still enjoy working toward completing typical coin sets, but it can become (almost) boring looking at a bunch of slabs, albums, and 2x2's in which the coins look identical except for the dates. As it is, my collecting inertia is so strong that I just can't stop looking to acquire more stuff. Bruce |

I got to thinking after I inspected it and stored it away-- this might actually be the last time I ever see it. So I guess this would make me more of an investor or speculator, eh? I do consider myself more a collector, but with these mint packaged sets, there's not much cause to ever open the box and look again once you've made the initial ogle/error/defect check. 2006 Silver Proof Sets Arrived

Sets received in today's mail which is interesting considering The MInt's site said they were shipped yesterday by "Parcel Post" - now how they get Parcel Post from Memphis (home of Elvis and the Ancient Greeks).. to So. Calif. in one day I'll never know. Beautiful sets. No fingerprints or boogers or dead bugs or anything else inside the plastic holders, and it only took a couple of blasting caps and a few minutes with a jackhammer to get the weirdly shaped, slim, airbag-free shipping box open. Now someone tell me, are those people in the covered wagon on the Nebraska State quarter supposed to have extra corn husk leaves coming out of their ears? Harv Same here. The morning I received the email saying they had shipped, the USPS truck pulled up as I was leaving for the office and handed me the package. That was literally "overnight" as well. |

2006 Silver Proof Sets Arrived
My 2006 proof sets (silver and base metals) arrived with me over here in
Jockland today courtesy of one of the rcc regulars. The carrier pigeon must have had a tail wind AND been on steroids. :-) The quality of the coins is worthy of being labelled `superb'. I am impressed. The coin designs are likewise `superb'. I really like the Jefferson nickel, but I really love the quarter designs for this year, especially ....nah....can't choose.....them all!
