Yet Another $1 Bill Redesign Rumor...
I do research on coin and currency issues every once in a while, and
stumbled across this: http://forum.autocareforum.com/showthread.php?p=12637 Apparently there is a rumor that, even though the U.S. Treasury website says that the $1 bill will not be redesigned, the rumor says it will, and the redesigned $1 bills will hit the streets around Thanksgiving. The person at the top states the $1 bill redesign issue, and the one on the bottom of the thread says that, bill readers will have to be reprogramed or replaced, so I'm guessing he means that the $1 bill will indeed be redesigned. Unlike the guy in the middle who claims that the $1 bill will not be redesigned, and only security features will be added. I don't believe this rumor, but I'm guessing you guys all know that I hope that this $1 bill redesign rumor is true. Any ideas as to whether this is true? I really don't see a big issue on redesigning the $1 bill, as far as vending machines go, because, if they can manage to reprogram their machines to take new (widely circulated) $5 bills, I see no problem with them programing in new $1, and while they're at it, have the Treasury prepare to issue, and have vendors program in a new $2 bill as well. One idea would be to redesign the $1 bill, and if the vendors do not want to pay to retool their machines to take new $1 bills, they should invest in a dollar coin machine, programed to take redesigned $1 bills (and possibly future redesigns of the $1, $2 and $5 bills) that can be easliy retooled for as long as $1, $2 and $5 bills are around and will spit out dollar coins for customers to use in the vending machines, and put this "dollar coin machine" next to their veing machines, and, hey, maybe people will realize what hassle those $1 bills are, and would think that they should have just asked for dollar coins at their bank over $1 bills in the first place, to avoid wasting time having using two vending machines just to get their pop or candy bar, or whatever. Tom P.S. Yeah...Yeah, the same thing repeated all over again. But I only posted this, because of a rumor of a redesigned $1 bill. But still, what do you guys think about the dollar coin machine issue I mentioned, where people might just get annoyed with $1 bills, and possibly start using dollar coins in the first place instead? |

If any redesign takes place, it would be because of the Treasury/Federal Reserve losing court cases on the issue of US currency violating the Americans with Disabilities Act (i.e., folks with poor vision having difficulty telling one denomination from another). And then it would be part of a general redesign of all denominations, which may end up giving us currency of different sizes. In this scenario, I think there's a slight chance that the government may decide to just ditch the $1 note (& possibly the $2) to keep the number of differing sizes/colors/whatever to a minimum. It might even prompt the authorities to issue notes above $100 again, what with inflation over the years & the desire to stay relevant, but that's even more iffy. |

The dollar bill will be around for the forseeable future because the public demands it. As I have mentioned before, the powerful strippers' lobby pressures Congress to keep the one, lest they have no bills to get stuffed in their g-strings. I will admit though, stuffing dollar coins into a g-string sounds like fun! The deuce sees so little circulation that almost nobody would care if they stopped printing them. I have to have my bank order them specifically for me or otherwise I'd never have them. |

Not to mention the fact that the timeline in the rumor (Thanksgiving) is incredibly tight considering you'd have to get a design approved, make the engravings, use the engravings to create plates, and then print a whole buttload of the new bills to be ready in time to "hit the streets" in November. When they redesigned the Series 1996 $20's, there was about a 3 1/2 month lag time between when they actually started printing the new bills, and when they were released for circulation. I don't know how much lead time they'd need for $1's, but it would have to be at least that long, since something like half the notes the BEP prints are ones. take care, Scott |

Yet Another $1 Bill Redesign Rumor...
We have some real dreamers in here, the only way I ever see the dollar
being excepted as a coin is if some amount of is added back to it, or a more attractive design is put on it. |
