SAN DIEGO FBI DONATES EQUIPMENT TO LOCAL CHILDREN
The San Diego FBI hadn't had a press conference for more than five years related to Operation Bullpen, so last Thursday it brought together local media and local children's groups and put together an informational and charitable press conference.
"There have been 63 people charged to date," said investigator Tim Fitzsimmons, who is most responsible for that number. "We wanted to give Major League Baseball the chance to talk, because of their work in this area, and the only other company we mentioned by name was eBay. I know everybody likes to beat up on them, but eBay has worked with me almost daily. They help us by untold documentation, testifying in court, and when you compare the assistance I get from them with other Web sites, it's night and day."
The lead speaker for the FBI was special agent in charge Daniel Dzwilewski. Mike Napolitano, a licensing director from Major League Baseball, spoke about MLB's authentication program and its goals of providing security to autograph collectors. The FBI gave the local youth groups a boost by removing fake autographs from its vast inventory of forged equipment and donated the balls and other items to those groups. Next up for Operation Bullpen is a hearing for the most recent people charged (pertaining to boxing-related memorabilia), and on Sept. 19 the trial involving Smokey's of Las Vegas begins.
