Curiosity Corner #15 A rather delicate doorstop.
The Re-discovery of the 6d. Western Australian Lithographic Stone
"When the King, as Duke of York, was making his tour in Australia in 1901. on his arrival at Perth he caused inquiries to be made in official circles concerning the stamps of Western Australia of 1854-57 which had been lithographed in the colony. It is entirely due to this action of His Majesty that I am enabled to give these notes on the first Six Pence value which I hope may prove of some interest to collectors. The inquiries of His Majesty led to the quite unexpected and important discovery of the actual lithographic stone that had been used for printing the Six Pence and was found in the office of the Postmaster General, the late Mr Richard A. Sholl, who stated that it had been used formerly as a door-weight or stop for keeping a door open. It was handed over to Mr H.J. Pether, who was then the Government lithographer. He had the stone thoroughly cleaned and prepared for printing impressions, two of which were presented to His Majesty with a note. A paper by E.D. Bacon published in the "London Philatelist" Vol. 33. 1924 (Posters Note) Alas, under the heavy weight of responsibility of the Royal Printing the stone cracked, and now rests in peace at the WA Museum. Another "Door stop" story may follow regarding the discovery of phosphate from a similar story (and features on a Nauruan stamp) |
