Australia Post aiming for stamp record

Australia Post will attempt
the world's largest ever
instant stamp program to
honour up to 90 possible
Aussie gold medallists in
the Commonwealth Games
in Melbourne.

Australia Post announced
it was aiming for a philatelic
world record by releasing a
stamp for each Australian
who wins gold, along with
stamps for the opening and
closing ceremonies and the
Games' most memorable
moment.

Among the hopefuls are
cyclist Kathy Watt who
will be trying for a fifth
Commonwealth gold,
netball captain Sharelle
McMahon who is hoping
to lead Australia to its
third consecutive gold,
while veteran Paralympic
sprinter Tim Matthews
wants his first taste of glory.

Watt, McMahon and
Matthews, who launched
the first three Games
stamps featuring their
chosen sports in
Melbourne, said they
were aiming to get
their head on a stamp.

"Hopefully the Australian
netball team can be part
of that because it will be
a huge honour," McMahon
said.

Australia Post philatelic
group manager Noel
Leahy said staff already
were training hard for
the Games, as they
had to design, produce
and deliver the "instant"
stamps to key Melbourne
outlets within 24 hours.

"It's the largest instant
program to ever occur
in the world," Mr Leahy
said.

"It's the largest ever
attempted by any
postal administration.

"Our design area, our
production area, our
distribution area will
be working late into
the night.

"There will be more stamps
produced in two weeks then
there usually would be in a
year. We are certainly going
to be busy."

Mr Leahy said the company
would normally produce about
60 or 70 new stamps in a year,
with each issue requiring about
12 months of planning, design,
printing and distribution.

The 2000 Sydney Olympics and
2004 Athens Olympics were trial
runs, with 16 and 17 stamps
produced respectively to honour
the gold medallists, but the
Melbourne Games would be an
even greater challenge, Mr Leahy
said.

Australia won 82 gold medals at
the last Commonwealth Games in
Manchester in 2002 and hopes to
do better in Melbourne this month.

The Commonwealth Games
started on March 15.

Ahem!
was that a gold medal I saw last evening?

Bravo! and to the little slip of a girl (16yo) from Papua New Guinea who won
the bronze medal in weight lifting.

Eat your words. Isle of Man just won a gold in cycling. If you count
medals per head of population I reckon that puts them top of the medals
table!

Maybe, but if you count stamps issues per head of popualtion they would
have to win another 300 medals to keep up their average ! ;-)

Hi

I do not remember seeing a post of how many of the possible 90 were
issued? And did they get them out in the 24 hour period?
