Default Question about 1848 large cent/ebay

I've noticed at any given hour there are at least one 1848 large cent
for sale on ebay. If you do a search for "1848 large cent" on ebay you
come up with 50 or more for sale/at any given time!

I do realize that there were over 6 million made, but is there really
that many available for sale...?

(It may take several years but I'm thinking of buying them all! lol)

The 1848 has the third largest mintage among large cents, and has
exceedingly little pressure from variety collectors, as the varieties are
exceedingly difficult to sort out in anything less than VF. So it is not
surprising that there would be that many available on eBay at any given
time.

Good luck on cornering the market, Bob!

Probably one of the rare instances where it might actually be a good
idea to bid on a counterfeit coin on eBay! (that is, as long as the
1848 counterfeit is a "genuine" counterfeit, or a "counterfeit"
counterfeit g).

Should have been:

"...as long as the 1848 counterfeit is a "genuine" counterfeit,
NOT a "counterfeit" counterfeit g).

Thanks for the chuckle!

Is there a good book out there about the United States large cent?

I'm looking for one myself. Let me know if and when you get any good
suggestions.

Here's a very basic large cent library:

Sheldon, Penny Whimsy (1793-1814)
Noyes, USLCs 1793-1814
Noyes, ULCs 1816-1839
Wright, The Cent Book (1816-1839)
Grellman, US Cents 1840-1857

For more information, log on to www.eacs.org, the website of the Early American
Coppers Club.
