Deputies arrest alleged conman who bought $94,000 in gold coins with bad check

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lano...bad-check.html Deputies arrest alleged conman who bought $94,000 in gold coins with bad check May 20, 2011 | 11:13am Authorities said Friday they have arrested a slick-talking con man from the San Bernardino Mountains who used a bad check to buy $94,000 in gold coins from a dealer then jetted to Australia to spend the proceeds on a high-stakes gambling venture. (Photo of Saint Jovite Youngblood) http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/.a/6...6a5f970c-300wi Detectives with the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department said they believe Saint Jovite Youngblood, 39, may have defrauded coin merchants and collectors across Southern California, including Los Angeles, where he once lived. Youngblood lives in Crestline and has 13 known aliases. He told the detectives he had his name legally changed from Dennis Schuler two decades ago. Youngblood was known to spin elaborate yarns when cozying up to coin dealers and investors, according to a report by Dets. Steve Boydston and Craig Harris. He bragged about earning a Purple Heart fighting terrorists; serving as a Navy SEAL; being related to former Los Angeles Rams football player Jack Youngblood; and telling people his wife and children were killed by a drunk driver. All the stories were bogus, the detectives said. Youngblood is a known gambler and "claims that over the years he won a lot of money playing cards,'' Harris said. Along with allegedly writing the bad check in 2009, Youngblood also courted investors, promising to purchase valuable coins, Harris said. "People would give him money to purchase coins or other items, and then he would not make good on their investment. We've identified several victims at this point,'' the detective said. Youngblood was arrested Thursday on suspicion of passing a check with insufficient funds. He was being held on $1-million bail in San Bernardino's Central Detention Center. Anyone who may have had dealings with Youngblood is asked to call the detectives at the Twin Peaks sheriff's station at (909) 336-0600. ... |
