Questions Poste Restante - General Delivery
On Sun, 29 Jun 2003 13:44:14 -0500, "A.E. Gelat"
Could someone please clarify what is Poste Restante? I thought it was for
mail to be picked up at a post office when no address is known, and the
postage is already prepaid. One example of Poste Restante is to send mail
to someone who would be visiting a city, and would pick up any mail upon
presentation of identification. Are any other uses, and why is a fee
You are correct, but SOME countries (ie France) charge a fee.
I hope this is helpful.
Current Info for NZ:

If you want mail sending to you in New Zealand but dont want it sent
to your hostel or need it to be sent ahead use poste restante.
Basically you decide which major place you want your post to be sent

Peru - Poste restante
You can have mail sent to you poste restante care of any main post
office (Correo Central), and, on the whole, the system tends to work
quite smoothly. Have letters addressed: full name (last name in
capitals), Poste Restante, Lista de Correos, Correo Central, city or
town, Peru. To pick up mail you'll need your passport, and you may
have to get the files for the initials of all your names (including
Ms, Mr, etc) checked. Rather quirkily, letters are sometimes filed
separately by sex, too – in which case it's worth getting both piles
checked. Some post offices let you look through the pile, others won't
let you anywhere near the letters until they've found one that fits
your name exactly.
Current info for France (seem to be the only ones charging a fee)
