If ever you get a website that asks for your ZIP code, use 48222. It is a post
office in Detroit that handles the shore-to-ship mail service for passing lake
boats. A power boat takes a bag of mail out alongside the ship as it goes by,
and it drops down a rope with the mail headed ashore. The guys in the boat take
that off and tie on the bag for the ship, which never slows down. Thus, if you
"live in" 48222, you could be in Duluth or Montreal for all anybody knows.

The federal government is trying to seize dozens of gold bars and coins and
thousands of silver coins found two years ago when agents raided a Portland
business whose owners were suspected of being tax cheats.

The unmarked gold and silver pieces were found in boxes, some never opened, in
a safe in the company's break room, according to court documents.

Now that 19 people associated with the business venture that offered investors
privacy from what they described as the "government snooping apparatus" have
entered guilty pleas, the federal government has moved to seize the gold and
silver.

Specifically, federal prosecutors are trying to get 47 10-ounce gold bars, 35
1-ounce gold coins and 3,069 1-ounce silver coins. At the time it was seized,
the gold and silver were valued at $200,000.

The precious metals were part of a tax-dodging scheme developed by Terry Neal,
a 58-year-old Gresham business executive who aggressively promoted his ability
to lower and even avoid federal tax obligations. Neal in April pleaded guilty
to one count of conspiring to defraud the United States, and according to the
terms of his plea agreement is expected to serve five years in prison. His
sentencing is set for November.

Eighteen others, including his associates and investors, also have entered
guilty pleas to charges that include filing false tax returns.

Until his guilty plea, Neal -- author of several books, including "The Offshore
Advantage" -- was a prominent force in the anti-tax movement.

Gold, purchased through the company, Crowne Gold, played a role in Neal's plan
to help investors avoid paying taxes, according to government officials. Neal
helped to found the company. According to court documents filed this week by
Assistant U.S. Attorney Leslie Westphal, investors bought gold as part of an
"elaborate scheme involving offshore accounts, credit cards and debit cards."

According to Crowne Gold's promotional material, clients would buy gold from
the company over the Internet, then Neal and his associates would hold it for
them in a "digital gold account."

Investors' gold and silver coins were stored in the same holding facility
without any labels or markings that distinguished one investor's holdings from
another, court records said.

With a gold account, investors were able to convert their investment into any
currency they wanted or apply the money toward a debit card issued by Crowne
Gold. Using gold made it harder for the federal government to trace investors'
money.

In fact, the primary benefit of dealing in gold was privacy, the company told
investors.

According to court records, the company's business plan was to "ensure against
overzealous governments from seizing client information."

Ron Hoevet, Neal's lawyer, declined to comment Friday on the government's
attempt to seize the gold and silver. Bob Weaver, who represents Crowne Gold,
said the effort is "a little premature."

"I think the government fails to perceive or understand what Crowne Gold's
business is," Weaver said.
