found this page while doing some research on surround sound receivers,
thinking about upgrading from my aging 17 year plus Technics system.

talked to a Radio Shack rep, he told me straight out, that NOTHING
they have, can beat my Technics receiver made in 1986 ! So I checked
all the specs from their catalog, against my old owner's manual for
the Technics, guess what, he's right. They only make one surround
sound receiver, that comes close, and that one has more distortion !
Truth be told, these cheapo under-$500, "500 watt" and "700 watt"
systems, have nowhere near that kind of power. They are in reality,
50-100 watt per channel stereo amps, then split between 5 or 7
surround speakers.

pretty lame...

of course, Technics, Pioneer, Kenwood, and Marantz (170 watts per
channel) make some kick-ass modern surround amps that "may" sound
better, but the entry fee is $1500-3000 !

has anyone here tried a vintage 8-track or turntable into one of these
new surround receivers ??

final question, is it worth it ??

Well I took a listen to a Sony surround sound receiver yesterday, with
alleged 500 watts, what a joke.

My aging Technics would eat it for a snack...

You guys need to lighten up already !

The Radio Shack employee was right in this case...that's why he also
has an old Technics amp...

Talkin' to the big rigs? Remember my other hobby/job now.
The last time I listened to a C.B. was about two months ago, when I had to
borrow a truck that another driver used, I turned his C.B. onto channel 19,
and I swear to god, the first thing I heard was C.B. spam. 'Stop by exit
132 for the best deals on C.B.s and accessories'. Pre recorded message too!
I heard a bunch of hookers looking for dates, etc. That's when I turned
F.M. radio on.
Remember the 'Big Ears C.B. to 8 track Adapter'? I used mine to plug my
scanner into my 8 track in the old Chevy when I was storm chasing.

nothing in the current Radio Shack catalog is as good as my '86
vintage Technics rack. My system is far from state of the art, which
makes Radio Shack offerings pretty damned pathetic...

We compared the specs...less watts, more distortion from the new
units. No wonder the $300 per amp price on the surround sound
gimmickry- it's a **** wagon.

For a bunch of guys who pride themselves in killfiling, you fellas
sure answer every thread I start like clockwork. In that vein, we'll
have to assume most Radio Shack employees are pretty knowledgeable
too. Being your 180 degrees wrong every time.
