WTF is this?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=120314299475 The barbarians who managed this Central America sale took some of the original ingots, sawed off the face with the assayers markings (maybe keeping a 1/4 inch or so of the bar behind the face) and then melted the remainder of the bars to supply gold to make this kind of crap. If I recall, they were worried that they couldn't sell so many original bars, containing so much gold, at a time when gold was weak. Somebody should write an article to enshrine (in the hall of shame) the names of the people who committed this atrocity. oly |

http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...m=120314299475 The ANA has this blurb about the California Historical Society (CHS) "commemorative restrike" and the PCGS slab: http://www.money.org/AM/Template.cfm...CONTENTID=1453 However, the photos appear to be broken links. The reference contained therein to the Red Book states (Private and Territorial Gold, p359): A "commemorative restrike" was made in 2001 using transfer dies made from the original [dies] and gold recovered from the SS Central America. The pieces have the inscription S. S. CENTRAL AMERICA GOLD C.H.S. on the reverse ribbon." I am unable to find an image of the reverse of the coin in the eBay listing. W. |
