Default 1909-S VDB Lincoln Cent AU58 Rare Coin

Hey my fellow RCC'ers- I am not a big Lincoln collector, but know a few
of the keys, of which this is one. Does this coin look right? IRA-
you have more sense about cents than anybody I have run across in the
group, so am looking to you..(no offense to anyother cent player I
might have missed). I know that the mint mark is one of the tell's on
this coin, and this one looks a little different..?? Anyway, what do
ya'll think on this one? I have heard this seller discussed in the
group before, and from what I remember he is a little "suspect".

I'm going to be mean, cruel, and vulgar.

Why buy the coin raw when you can buy it certified from a reputable
grading service from a reputable dealer at a fair price?

Rick, I know very little about cents, but that one looks cleaned to me. The
crud around Liberty next to the bright fields looks suspect. The surface
also looks -- for lack of a better word -- porous. Lincoln looks like he has
chicken pox. I would let this one pass if I were looking for a 09-S VDB. To
me, it looks chemically altered and wiped.

I just had one worse-looking for color than this come back in a PCGS slab -
as an AU-50, no less. It's those digs in front of the face that would keep
this one out of most plastic, methinks. As others have said, you can get a
comparable, undamaged example with nice color and surfaces for the same
money if you're willing to hold out.

Number one, that coin is not AU58. It has the detail of an EF40. Number two,
it does not look to have been cleaned but would probably bodybag at PCGS/NGC
due to the gouges on the obverse. They're distracting and fairly nasty.
Thirdly, the mintmark is correct for a 1909S VDB. Here's mine for
comparison:

I'd guess that it is probably genuine, but would have to examine it in hand
to be sure. FWIW, I would NEVER buy this date on Ebay, uncertified, without
an iron-clad return policy. Also the price, at $725 currently, is more than
I would pay for that coin considering the damage.

This cent has been cleaned with a polishing cloth, strong possibility
that the "S" has been added, and in no way is it AU!!!....conservative
grading is VF +.... Pass on it!!!

Personally, I disagree.

As summed up here so many times already, it's a problem coin. Do not buy
a problem coin, even at a better price, you will never be happy with it.
Personally, I would be hard pressed unless I knew well of the dealer, to
get an S-vdb on ebay, even slabbed. If I'm spending even 400.00 on a
coin, I want to see it in hand. (I am convinced I am the poorest member of
the coin collecting community.:-) ) Perhaps I'm spoiled by having
dealers and shows in driving range, but an S-vdb is just not that unusual
to take any kind of chance with.

BigDog:

This is my sense worth on this coin.

First, it has way too much wear to be anywhere near AU58.

Second, those deep gouges would prevent it from even being considered by
PCGS.

Third and final, it has been cleaned.

Daniel :-}
