From the article:

"Between five and 10 of the company's 120 employees will be laid off
by the end of 2005, although Kwong [of Bic Corp.] said that number may
change due to the seasonality of Sheaffer's business.

'That's our guess–timate,' she added."

Now, I realize this is a little OT for this newsgroup, but I cannot
*believe* this Kwong woman is actually so crude as to use the
unutterably twee "guesstimate" (a useless portmanteau if ever there
was one) when talking about terminating people's livelihoods! Did she
think she was being cute or something?

These manager types disgust me.

Noodler's Ink was in part founded because of that great company leaving US
ink production (it had the largest facilities in the country at the time).
That made yours truly both depressed and angry...because apparently their
costs INCREASED as a result. I also discovered one could make inks
previously unthought of as long as one believed ink was a technology/growth
story instead of being mired in the belief that it was going to suffer
inevitable death and decline!

So, you are not alone in being "disgusted".

As for nib manufacturing in the US, it is a far more complex issue and I am
sadly more open to their point of view than I once was:

Well, if you want to buy fountain pen that is really made in the USA,
then you'd better buy it from Bexley.

& Where does Bexley get their nibs?

If the Japanese nib producers get pushed to the wall as well...I fear the
world will be down to only a handful in an oligopoly...or worse - an
outright monopoly. It seems to be what the market wants in the end, because
many have tried to offer it alternatives.

Bexley, like most small manufacturers, gets most of their nibs from the
German nib manufacturer Bock. I know there have been QC issues in the past
and that on some Bexleys the nibs are from other, also German, nib
manufacturers.
