Default Yet another old woman cashing in silver for face story..

So I'm in the local Post Office this morning yakking with the friendly clerk
who saves the occasional Silver coin for me, and no I wasn't holding up the
line, there was no line, and he told me he went to his bank yesterday where
he's friendly with one of the tellers and the teller told him that an old
woman had come in schlepping the legendary and yet somehow not unexpected
"bag full of dollars all dated 18xx" and wanted to cash them in, yes, for
face.. so the teller did, and then immediately bought them all out of his
drawer, quantity unknown.. and told the Post Office guy what had happened
and the Post Office guy said "I"ll ask my coin collecting customer (me) the
next time he comes in." So he asked me and I told him those are Morgan
Dollars, Silver value alone about $5.00 each for worn out common dates,
nutty old women do this all the time because they have no idea what they
have or what it's worth, and common circulated ones sell for about $10.00
each, but lots of rare dates worth a lot of money even in worn out
condition, do you know what dates they were??.. And he said well his teller
friend said a bunch of them were from 1893. {{gulp}} So I asked did they
have a Mint Mark "S" and He said what's that, which I explaned what it is
and where it would be, so he said he would ask his teller friend to look
under the Eagle and make a list of what he has.. {{gulp V2.0}} so when I
find out, I'll post again..

Why am I NEVER in a bank when this kind of stuff happens.. sigh.. "Hey lady,
I'll give you $3.00 each for them, the bank will only give you a dollar
each. What do you say? There's an ATM right over there and I'll pull out the
cash right now. Want it??"..

My next door neighbour a few years ago was well into her 80's. She heard we
were going to Canada over the weekend, and went back to her place and came
back with a bag of Canadian change she said she had for years and never got
back to Canada with. I was floored, nothing later than George VI, 5¢
silvers, 10¢, 25¢, and the large cents all dated before 1920. Interestingly
there was also an 1884 Indian Cent in EF with some lustre in the lot. I
carefully explained to her that they were worth far more than I could spend
them for in Canada and politely gave them back and let her know that if she
wanted to sell them that I would give her a high price at a later time..
She told me another time about all the "old money" in her safety deposit
box, and wanted me to look at it sometime. Unfortunately that time never
came as she passed away in 2000 and her relatives carted off all the stuff
and probably sold it for a pittance.

At least I got to buy my Grandfather's silver dollars before he succeeded in
spending them in the A&W, they are the prizes of my silver dollar collection
now, especially the 1897.
