Canada wins international stamp design awards

Canadian postage stamps have once again been awarded top honours at
international stamp design contests.

The Continental Cup for the most beautiful stamp in America, was
awarded to the Lunar New Year stamp (Year of the Horse) issued by
Canada Post on January 3, 2002.

In addition to the Continental Cup, the stamp was also named the 3rd
place winner in the World's Most Beautiful Stamp category. The Stamp
World Cup contest is organized by Timbropresse, a French-language
philatelic news group, and seeks to recognize the most accomplished
philatelic productions of postal administrations around the world.
Thirty-five postal administrations (including Australia, Singapore and
Belgium) participated in the competition. In the Most Beautiful Stamp
category, Namibia took top honours followed by Singapore, Canada,
Argentina and Luxembourg. This is the second year in a row that Canada
has won the Continental Cup.

The 2002 St. Gabriel International Award, named after the saint
nick-named "the lord's postman", for Best Religious Stamp has
been awarded to the World Youth Day stamp issued by Canada Post
on July 23, 2002. http://tinyurl.com/2rlx6

The St. Gabriel International Award, a sterling silver plaque
depicting the Annunciation by sculptor Enrico Manfrini, is given to
postal authorities for stamp issues of intrinsic artistic value and
great religious significance. For the first time ever, the 2002 award
is being shared by two countries, Canada and Italy. The award was
established in 1969 by the World Union of St. Gabriel, a worldwide
association of collectors of religion on stamps.

Third place honours in the 2003 Yehudi Menuhin Trophy competition were
awarded to Canada Post's stamp honouring the 100th anniversary of the
Orchestre symphonique de Québec, Canada's oldest active symphony
orchestra. The stamp, issued on November 7, 2002, shared the honour
with a Finnish issue.

First and second place honours were awarded to Brazil and Spain,
respectively. The Philatelic Music Circle (PMC) is an
international thematic society for collectors with an interest
in stamps and an appreciation of music. The award is named
in memory of Yehudi Menuhin, world famous violinist and conductor,
who was Patron of the PMC for 30 years.
