Not so OT when you consider that one of our RCC number uses Honus as his
screen name.

SIGH

Those cards (the T206 series) are surprisingly affordable, for the most
part. But that guy's right; this one's the Holy Grail.

quote
Wagner’s card was among the first of hundreds of cards of major league
players produced by the American Tobacco Co. and included in packages of
cigarettes.

Unlike other players, however, Wagner quickly demanded that his card be
withdrawn. Theories vary as to why, with one being that he didn’t believe
American Tobacco paid him enough.

A nonsmoker, the Pittsburgh shortstop was arguably the second-greatest
baseball player of his era, behind Ty Cobb. Wagner hit .344 during his
rookie year of 1897, and batted over .300 for 17 consecutive seasons,
winning eight National League batting titles.

/quote

His granddaughter stated that the reason he wanted his card pulled was
because kids were the main collectors, and he didn't want the kids to have
buy smokes to get his card. And FWIW, the article notes that he was a
non-smoker, but neglects to mention that he chewed...so it wasn't that he
was anti-tobacco, either. That's the most common theory put forth.

And as for that arguably second behind Cobb comment, it was written by an
idiot.

Thanks for the link!!
