Alsace
Afternoon all,
Some time ago a dealer in switzerland on ebay, was offering a item which he believed was a proof for a stamp prepared in 1914 for the liberation of Alsace in 1914. Does anyone know if such a thing was ever prepared? The dealer himself was uncertain of the item and was going off notes attached. Alan |

Alan I has never heard about! some villages or towns has been liberated and occupaded by French army at beginning of the war in southern part of Alsace (Thann, Moosch, Wesserling, Masevaux, Ferrette and I miss some but can find the name if somebody has interest) and they use always French normal stamps with a cancelation where you find the name of the Town at the top, and ALSACE at the bottom!! I generaly look those pages at stamp exhibition in France and have never seen such a stamp you write (but this is not a proof that such a stamp doesn't exist as "non émis")! It exist some stamps with overprinted "Alsace Libérée", they was ùake after end of the war!!! Have a nice sunday! -- Jean-Paul DROGER (enlever "anti." et remplacer "ptt" par "wanadoo" pour me joindre en perso; remove "anti." and replace "ptt" by "wanadoo" to answer me directly) |

The overprint is on 4 lines, "Réoccupation / Française / en / ALSACE" , with or without a rectangular frame. The stamps are of Blanc, Mouchon or Sower design, with 1c to 25c denominations. Dallay seems to say they were prepared in 1914 but not issued (because the expected takeover of Alsace didn't occur so quickly). See an example he http://www.philatelix.fr/catalogue/t...=G14_2%20B%20I The cat values are approx. 400 ¤ (**) and 275 (*) for each stamp. hth -- Kind regards, Bruno |
