Default A question about cancels

Hi,

I've been collecting Deutsches Reich for quite some time a picked up some
interesting items however a friend of a friend who knows a lot more brought
my attention to a cancel.

It's part horseshoe Hamburg cancel on 1/2 Groschen orange, Michel 14. The
"HAM" is inside the horseshoe itself. If Michel Spezialised goes into
cancels I can't find it or understand the German. How do I find out more
about special DR cancels.

I have loads of DR that I am going through for errors and colour variations
but it never occurred to me to look at cancels, apart from the special
souvenir ones.

Thanks for any light you can shed on this subject, which I have tried to
explain to my wife really is interesting!

Michel has a 3 volume series ("Stempel-Handbuch") on DR cancels:

Part 1 - 1868 to 1880, 224 pages
Part 2 - 1880 to 1898, 376 pages
Part 3 - "Klaucke"-postmarks, 248 pages

All in German of course. I believe the first two are out of print.

There are also many other spezialized German-language handbooks,
for example the Infla-Berlin series.

Many thanks for that. Now the age old problems of hunting down the books
and learning even more 'Michel' German! :-) I'm also hunting for the Michel
companion for non-German speaking Englishers like myself if anyone knows of
an outlet or has a copy....

Steve,

I have the 1872-1933 volume of the "Will Payne Companion ..."
available for sale. It covers Michel 1-478, Dienst 1-131, etc.
Contact me if interested - jay _at_ jaypex _dot_ com.

I will caution you that Michel is a moving target, i.e. editorial
changes are made every year. The Companion is based on the 1996
Michel and the translation may not conform exactly to the current
German text.

If one is available in your area,I would suggest taking an adult
ed or community college course in German. Once you have been
exposed to the grammar, using a German-English dictionary will be
much easier.

Jay

Sounds perfect. I shall email seperately thank you.

Certainly good advice. I have made many trips to Munich and also failed
German 'O' level many years ago, otherwise I'd never have got as far with my
Michel Spezialised! :-)
