Modern Hinges
I have been using stamp hinges since about 1957. I know of no product
whose quality has deteriorated so much in that time. 47 Years ago, one could buy for about 10 cents per thousand, hinges that lay flat, and were easily peeled off when needed, you may have had to fold them yourself, but so what. Now,you're lucky if removing the hinge doesn't thin the stamp, at best you're going to get an ugly remnant. The latest wrinkle is that the hinges roll up into tiny "scrolls" which have to be straightened out before use. This is very difficult and they sometimes roll up again when you are trying to stick them to the back of the stamp. (I've had packets of hinges in the past which sat around literally for decades without this happening.) I'll name names here the brand is Prinz. I thought German products were good. Manufacturers, come on. We aren't talking about rocket science here. Why can't you make hinges that don't roll up and are easily peelable.I don't really care if they are pre-folded. Readers, please don't suggest that I buy ancient hinges at auction. I don't feel like paying more for a hinge than the value of the stamp it holds.Besides, the supply of Dennison, Fold-O etc. will eventually be exhausted. -- To e-mail me get rid of the cats and dogs. |

In France I have the same problem, I too use hinges on my "used" stamps! It is also difficult to find to buy such things, prices are higher then 1 $ the 1000 because it doesn't exist a lot of people that now use hinghes: they use "plastic mounts" or stockbooks!! Sorry to can't help you! But if someone finds good hinges I'll interest to get 2 or three packets (against some bank notes or stamps mint at facial value) HA VE A GOOD DAY? I too have cold feelings toward the stamp hinges.
Experience has taught me not to pull the old hinge off the stamp, soak it off and then you do not have to worry about hinge marks and more important thinning the stamp. I did ruin many stamps pulling the hinge off. Also very important when applying hinges is to use very little moisture. The most simple way is with the tip of the tounge. Without wanting to get dubbed a conspiracy theorist, I think that the mount
manufacturers (Hawid et al) have bought the hinge makers and intentionally lowered the quality so that we feel obliged to shell out a pile of money on their mounts rather than using the reasonably priced hinges. Now, if you'll excuse me, I believe I hear the feds kicking my door down.... -- Cheers - John Mycroft coryton_at_cobbsmill_dot_com |

Without wanting to get dubbed a conspiracy theorist,
Well, people will do it anyway! ;-)) I think that the mount manufacturers (Hawid et al) have bought the hinge makers and intentionally lowered the quality so that we feel obliged to shell out a pile of money on their mounts rather than using the reasonably priced hinges.+ There is a hinge available today with very acceptable performance. It is the "Dennis'" Hinge - but it is only for "NON-GUM" stamps. It is stable, does not curl and can be peeled from "NON-GUM" stamps almost as easily as the old Dennison Or Fold-O Hinge. It should never be used on mint/stamps with gum, it will not peel. The only place I've seen Dennis' hinges for sale was on eBay - but I'm sure dealers someplace have them. I think the market price is about $2.99 a pack. If you want use hinges to mount mint stamps then you'll have to fork over the premium for old Dennison or Cohn Fold-O hinges. Even at $10.00 a pack, that comes to only a penny each - a heck of a lot cheaper than mounts - and in the end, these are the only things available today for mounting in albums. Penny a hinge, 40 cents a mount. As far as Hawid, G&B, Scott, Prinz and their ilk lowering the quailty of their hinges - I don't think they did - I think their hinges always were trash! I think the market price is about $2.99 a pack. Subway Stamp http:www.subwaystamp.com carries them, $2.40/pk. They claim on their website that G&K (part of Subway) bought the old Dennison machine, rebuilt it, and bought the old formula too & are using it to mfgr hinges now. They're in red, white & blue packs of 1000 (No. 48-064) and have a light green tint to them. Cost me 75˘/pkg then. |

How about Subway Stamps - where they make "Dennis" hinges? snip It think it is www.subwaystamp.com and they just so happen to have this item right there, ready to look at. :^) I still need to invest in many 1000s of hinges, so I'm staying quite on top of this subject.
