Q: Dutch cancels
Could somebody comment on the following postmarks found on Dutch
stamps (1960s to 1990s)? - double circle with inscription "POSTERIJEN +" in the ring - double circle with empty "bridge" and repeated inscription "POST PTT" in the ring - ring of repeated inscription "post ptt" without any lines - placename in capitals in a single line in an 8.5 mm high frame, e.g. ------------ | SCHIEDAM | ------------ I suppose the first three are cancels applied (perhaps by the letter carrier) on stamps which have escaped somehow the ordinary postmark. Correct? But what about the single-line postmarks? They certainly have a pleasant old-fashioned air about them although they are surely from the 2nd half of the 20th century, judging from the stamps. The single-line placenames were used in the Christmas/New Year season to avoid dated cancellations. I wonder why one should avoid them, maybe as an excuse when mail was late due to the increased traffic in this season, or perhaps to "protect" the sender who may have posted the season's greetings too late ;-)? Thanks, Rein! Jan-Martin |
