To the Third Reich coin experts
I have a 10 Pfennig coin military issue K&M # 99, 1940. The puzzling thing
about it is that the mint mark to the left of the number 10, is in Gothic character. And not only that, it is the capital letter R, which doesn't agree with any of the mints listed in the catalog. Any explanation??? Thanks. Zevim |

Might that R be the first character of the word "Reichspfennig"? :-) On those coins the mint mark can be found at the bottom ... Christian |

Thanks for your response. Now that you mentioned it, it makes sense that the R on the left and the Pf on the right stand for "Reichspfennig". But I still don't see any mint mark below the 10, or anywhere else, and I use a high magnification microscope. Did they mint any without a mint mark? Don't think there are any without a mint mark. If yours is dated 1940, it will probably have an A or maybe a G. (10 Pf coins with B, D, E, F and J were also made in that year but are somewhat rare.) That letter is located on the reverse, at the very bottom, between the 19 and the 40. It is hard to recognize, though, especially since most of those zinc coins are not well preserved ... Christian |
