Default Scott #591 US

Some people emailed me regarding how to detect a bogus Scott #591
(American, 4th Bureau series, perf 10, Monroe 10 center.) Here is the
simple, fool proof way. This will work for an unused stamp, with gum. In
the production of the 591, the only rotary gum breaker used was breaker
#1. This breaker added 4-5 gunm ridges to each stamp. This will
immediately prove the stamp is genuine. (Of course, measure the gauge of
the perforations.) A bogus stamp will have smooth gum....no breakers. If
there are no breakers, either the stamp was regummed or is really a
#603. The only stamps from this series that were printed with no ridges
were 581, may be 582, 583, and 583a. Do not buy an unused copy without
checking with the seller about how many gum ridges (breakers) there are.
