Help with European Paper Money Please!
I have some old European Paper Money and I am interested in seeing if it
has any value, besides just conversational! I hope that some of the same resident numismatists would be so kind as to give me their opinions, if they can. Also, are the Luxembourg notes still acceptable today....that country has'nt changed since they were issued, has it? I guess you would have to exchange them for euros, No? Just Wondering..... Anyway here goes: Algerian 5 Francs Note 5" x 3 1/4" Date B.5-5-1941.B Nice Pastel Colors Harbor scene with small boats and veiled woman holding fruit Condition is EX Fine Watermark is profile of Ancient greek looking woman 3 Notes from the Grand Duche of Luxembourg 20, 10 and 5 Francs 20 is 3" x 6", others 3" x 5" 20 is dated 1943 and is printed by Waterlow and Sons, London others have no date but are printed by the American Bank Note Company 20 has nice scene of team of oxen pulling haycart in field surrounded by wooded hills and in foreground a shirtless farmer rests holding a small scythe 10 and 5 just have picture of queen/princess 20 is in about EX Fine condition 10 is EX Fine 5 is Fine 2 Italian Notes 2 Lire and 10 Lire 2 Lire is 3" x 2" 10 Lire is 4" x 2 1/2" Both dated 1939 2 Lire has Picture of statue of Roman (Caesar?) 10 Lire has Profile of Balding Man (General/President?) with Grey Mustache other side has Roman Statue 2 Lire is EX Fine 10 Lire is Very Fine with some light stains Finally: 12 German Notes I'll run them down individually from oldest to newest: 100 Mark 4"x6" April 1903 Lovely Blue Colors 2 Women in flowing robes holding a picture of a Woman with a wreathed crown only about Fine Condition with major folds and some staining, but the stains are not on the picture side which is nice 100 Mark 8"x4" April 1910 A True Piece of Art, It would take a few pages to describe everything in the engraving. I'll try and summarize....A queen sitting on a throne holding a sword under a huge oak tree with all manner of things on the ground around her and 3 Warships steaming up the river in the backround. I would'nt mind framing this one. Large Watermark next to the engraving appears to be the Kaiser himself! In about fine condition with a few stains, many folds and one small tear which does NOT extend into the printing. 1000 Mark 71/2"x4" April 1910 Two robed women flanking a large wreathe with a crown and a coat of arms inside. This note is the finest one of all of these old bills, and except for some very tiny blotches on the edges and a slightly rounded corner or two, is the same as it was 94 years ago. Never folded. Perfectly centered. Extremely Fine. (I Actually just found this one listed online for 8$ US In UNC condition....it was called 'Agriculture' or something.....Oh well! not gonna buy a Mercedes with this one ;-) 100 Mark 4"x 6" January 1911 Nice blue coloring. A lot of cherubs flying around. This note differs from the other german notes in that it does not say 'Reichsbanknote', but 'Wurttembergische Notenbank'. Fine condition with folds but no stains. 1000 Mark 3"x6" Sep. 1922 A rather plain note. No pictures at all. Very Fine Condition. 5000 Mark 3"x 5" December 1922 The entire note seems to be printed on watermarked paper. There is a picture of someone who looks very familiar (Bach?) This note is clearly not as finely printed as the Pre-War notes. No Folds at all. Extremely Fine. 500,000 Mark 31/2" x 61/2" Mar? 1923 I guess they were getting into hyper- inflation here! A rather plain bill with just two profiles of ancient looking males. The watermark appears to be A Vine creeping up a pole? Very Fine Condition. and lastly : 100,000 Mark January 1923 41/2"x 7" Nice purple colors and a lot of cool colored Very big threads on the right side of the note. Profile of a man who again looks very familiar(Kepler? was he German?) Watermark is again a vine like thing this time with oak leaves. Very Fine Condition. Also have 4 little notes that I think are American "Invasion money" notes if I am not mistaken. Circulated by invading troops in occupied Germany? Dated 1944 Two 1/2 Mark notes. One 1 Mark note. One 5 Mark note. These are 21/2" x 3" and are in Very to Extremely Fine Condition except one 1/2 Mark note has some pencil writing on the edges. Thank you for any help you can provide. Rich |
