India op ID please.
Someone identified these stamps as for use in Muscat and Oman. This
is not exactly true. The issue was for use only in the Muscat post office, as Oman had no post offices. The postal services of Muscat were run by the Indian Government, and Indian stamps were used without any overprint. They can be identified by postmarks with Muscat or with a number assigned by the Indian postal authorities. At that time, Muscat and Zanzibar were ruled by two cousins of the Al Bu Said dynasty. The Arabic overprint reads: Aal Bu Sa'id. The double A stands for an "a" sounded as a long aaah. The apostrophe in Bu Sa'id stands for an Arabic consonant does not exist in any other language that I know of. To commemorate the bicentenary of the dynasty, two sets of stamps were issued. For Zanzibar, there was a special issue inscribed "AL BUSIED DYNASTY 1744-1944", SAG 327-330. As Muscat did not have stamps of its own, stamps of India were overprinted in Arabic "Al Bu Sad 1363" The Hegira year 1363 corresponds to 1944 AD. This issue was used in Muscat, the only post office there.. SAG catalogs them under Muscat, #1-15, and #O1-O10 for official use.. Yes, thanks for the history lesson. I guess I should have replied that these overprints are listed under the country Oman in Scott and Michel and under the country Muscat in Stanley Gibbons and Minkus. |
