Roger Maris on North Dakota state quarter?

Nothing against Roger Maris but what has he ever done for North Dakota
other
than just being a resident there at one time? Honoring someone on a
state quarter just because they are from that state is not a great
idea. I was never
happy with Helen Keller on the Alabama quarter for the same reason.
Roger Maris
was a famous baseball player for the New York Yankees.

And there are hockey teams even for juniors.

As a graduate of North Dakota State University (NDSU....go Bison!), I
should probably take offense....

However, of all the states I have lived in, (MN, ND, MD, and CA), ND
is the only one I've sat and wondered "What The Heck Are They Going To
Put On Their Quarter???"

I have nothing against the state, and enjoyed my time there a great
deal. But as far as history and landmarks go, it's pretty dang
barren.

I'm thinking Lawrence Welk might be a better choice than Roger Maris,
but then you would have the same criticism you mention. (I would,
however, like to see the inscription, "A one-a and a two-a"

Maybe an Indian and a bison would be appropriate, signifying the two
major colleges in the state: The UND Fighting Souix, and the NDSU
Bison.

But, when it comes to designing the quarter, I've come to the
conclusion that the residents of the state have the one and only valid
opinion. I've seen criticism of Minnesota's "boat on a lake with
loon", but in all honesty, that is an apt description of how
Minnesotan's view Minnesota. Whether the rest of the country has a
problem with it is irrelevant. This MN native likes it.

Now it's up to native North Dakotan's to have their own say.....

Lame. Escpecially a baseball player. Double lame.

Of course anything worth a crap in Dakota is in the South.

I have no complaint about honoring a baseball player, but to rate a
coin, two MVP awards are not enough. He'd have to be exceptional on the
order of Honus Wagner or Babe Ruth, or have an added important dimension
like Jackie Robinson, Roberto Clemente or Jim Eisenreich. ;-)

state, and now we suggest the best they can do is commemorate a hole
in the ground.

I'm expecting them to request that I send my diploma back any second
now.....

I remember when they tried to change their name to merely Dakota, but then the
south state claimed since it was the REAL Dakota it would do the same thing....

USA Today had an article a few months ago about the poor image of North
Dakota. Dull and boring, cold and nothing to do. They are having a hard
time keeping their young people there as many want to leave as soon as
they graduate from high school or college. The cost of living is reasonable but
salaries are lower than many other states from most professions and it is
hard for companies to recruit people to come there.

About this time of year, I once drove through North Dakota on
the way to Winnipeg. I expected the fields of wheat and hay.
What I didn't expect was the fields of sunflowers. On the left
side of the road, it was if they were staring at me. On the
right, they had the nerve to turn their backs to me.

My design for the North Dakota quarter is a hand reaching for
a light switch.
