Default Vatican Charged My CC

I thought that the Vatican Orders had been filled months ago for the BU and
Proof Sets. Those are the only things I ordered from the Vatican back in
March. I just assumed I had missed out on getting them. Then I noticed a
charge from 8/11 by 'Filatelico Numismatica Citta Del Vait' on my credit
card for $180.99.

My calculations would indicate that this is for both the Proof (issue price
125 euro) and the BU (issue price 21 euro) sets.

It's a good day when the Pope charges your credit card

Heh. When I first read the subject line, I thought I was about to read a
story from some tabloid along the lines of "Martians Ate My Baby!"

Congratulations on maybe finally getting your coins.

Jack, Hi.. A similar charge, a bit more, actually, appeared on my card the
same day.. I think I ordered two Mint Sets and one Proof Set back in March
and had pretty much given up on them.. although unnamed, my experiences
ordering Sets from The Vatican have actually been referred to in Coin World
articles (Hi, Wm. T. Gibbs ..

My bank can't tell me who the merchant is charging it until early next week,
and the amount has changed a bit, probably due to the Euro fluctuating
against the dollar, but by my calculations, the amount looks right for what
I ordered..

Now I have to tell you, just because they hit your card, don't count your
Vatican Sets before they hatch into your mailbox..

Two years ago they charged me $80.00 and change for their first Euro Proof
Set. They told me they shipped it. Weeks later, nothing. I started emailing
them. Finally I got a response.. loosely translated from Italian to English
it said "Oops we didn't ship it afterall.. sorry, would you like us to send
you a refund check or put the money on your account for next year??".. I
asked for a refund check, which I eventually got, in US Dollars drawn on a
bank in NYC..

At the time I got that check, that Proof Set, for which they charged me
$80.00 and change, and which they never shipped to me, was selling for
almost $2000.00 on eBay.. so you can imagine my chagrin when they told me
they didn't ship it after all..

So I wait to see what this mystery charge on my card is, and if it is indeed
from The Vatican, then the next phase of squirming is to see if the Sets
actually show up in the mail..

Unfortunately the 2004 Sets are not selling for anywhere near what the 2001
or 2002 sets sold for on eBay.. a quick check reveals the Mint Set, which
they charge 21 Euros for is going for about US$250.00, and the Proof Set for
about $500.00.. but I will re-sell them after I get them and admire them for
about .000000002 seconds.. or I might sell one Mint Set and the Proof Set,
and keep one Mint Set.. or I might sell both of those and keep the Proof
Set.. I'm still pondering, but first I have to actually get them..

And then coming later this year, is the "Lottery" drawing for the Monaco
2004 Euro Proof Set, their first.. I sent my order form for one back a
couple months ago. I thought this mystery charge that appeared on my card a
few days ago could have been it, but it's not, since that set's price was
198 Euros plus shipping, which would translate to about US$250.00 which is
about $40.00 higher than the mystery charge.. I doubt Monaco decided to
lower their set's price.. only 4500 of those sets will be sold to the people
who filled out the letter they sent out and mailed it back, no photocopies
allowed, one set per letter, so they would receive it by July 30nd, 2004..
which I did.. of the ones that they received in time, they will then draw
4500 of them and each lucky person gets one Set for 198 Euros..

I expect that set to skyrocket in price due to the Lottery nature of how
they are being sold and the incredibly low Mintage.. it might even skyrocket
into the $2000.00 range as The Vatican's first Euro Proof Set did..

The lottery took already place.
Monaco send a letter date August 11th. Everybody seems to get a letter, also
the people that did not win.
I guess it takes a few days to reach the States. ;-)
I got my letter yesterday and I will get a set.

I don't expect the set to go skyrocket in price, it is already very
expensive and a mintage of 15.000 is quite high for a Proof set.
And it also is not the first proof set of Monaco, the first of 2001 is sold
for between 600 and 700 euro.
Some coindealers expect it even to fall under the issue price.
I expect the price to be somewhere between 250 and 350 euro.

Great! My card was charged in mid June and I received my sets early last
week. The medal in the proof set is really nice.

I remember well the difficulties you had with the Vatican. Your bad
experience does seem to be the exception. I don't recall anyone else on RCC
who's had a similar experience.

The charge on my credit card also was a mystery for a couple of days. In
fact my credit card company called me because they thought the charge was
suspicious.

Hmm.. interesting.. well yeah, sure, a letter will take longer to get to me
than it will to get to .nl from Monaco (France..) ..

Congratulations on getting your name drawn..

But if they are only selling 4,500 of the Sets by Lottery to their "best"

And it also is not the first proof set of Monaco, the first of 2001 is

Was that a Euro Coins Proof Set??.. Or was it Francs??.. I thought the 2004
Monaco Proof Set was their first with Euro Coins.. but I guess I thought
wrong.. I've been on their subscription list for three years and this is the
first time they've offered to sell me a Euro Coins Proof Set..

Some coindealers expect it even to fall under the issue price.
I expect the price to be somewhere between 250 and 350 euro.

Thank you Harv, until now it looks like about 80 percent is drawn and only
20 percent is rejected, but this might change of course.

The other sets will mainly go to coindealers, a small part maybe will be
sold by Monnaie de Paris in the online shop.
I guess this will be about October/November

This was also an euro set, issue number 3.500
It was only sold by coindealers and a very few online in the MdP shop, it
was in only about half an hour, estimated number 50-100 sold online, rest by
dealers

Maybe, we'll see, but if indeed 80% will get the set direct from the museum,
I don't think very much more people want it, I know of a lot of collectors
that did not send in their coupons because of the price of the sets, and
another group is only buying them to sell them as soon as possible on ebay,
just like you ;-)

I got the letter today. I get to sit on the "20 percent is rejected" bench
because I got a "sorry, your name wasn't drawn" letter, not a "Your name was
drawn, you lucky *******!" letter ..

I'll keep an eye on that.. if you get any advance notice as to when the
Monnais de Paris will offer them, post here, please and put MONACO in the
subject line.. depending on their price, I might try to get one before they
all vanish..

It's a matter of what do I need more, a LQQK LQQK RARE!!.. Euro Coin Set, or
the money I can get from selling it to pay bills, and the latter usually
wins. If I can buy a set, like a Vatican Mint Set, for about $25.00 and
sell it for about $250.00 (what the 2004 Sets seem to be going for..) ..
then away it goes..

Other Euro Coins I have kept and plan to keep.. I have that fancy blue
padded Lighthouse album with all the "easy" countries totally filled.. I
filled that up in 2001 by buying all eight coins of each "easy" country from
eBay sellers.. so that album is totally full, all the coins are BU, and
that's that..

I bought three of the 2004 Spanish Dali Commemoratives including the monster
50 Euro Coin to keep, not to sell.. first of all, they are not re-selling at
any premium at all yet, since dealers are not sold out of them yet, and
second of all, Dali was one of my art heroes, and the coins are simply too
cool for words, especially that 50 Euro Monster.. but hey, there are only
12,000 of those coins in the world, and if someday it is selling for four
figures, away it goes..

Sometimes yes, my goal is to turn a quick and healthy profit on eBay, and I
don't see anything evil about doing that at all.. I love coins, I collect
coins, but I'm not rich, and I have good times and bad times like most other
people, so if I am not emotionally attached to something, and someone will
pay me ten times what it cost me, hey, they can have it.

There are some things I own that would probably mean absolutely nothing to
someone else, or might be valuable to someone else, but they mean so much to
me, that I would simply never sell them. Some things I buy for the sole
purpose of re-selling, and I specialize in a few areas of collecting (not
just coins..) .. where I know what something is truly worth, find a seller
who doesn't have a clue, get it dirt cheap, then turn around and sell it
quickly for a good profit.. Sometimes I do what a lot of people do, and that
is "upgrade" a collectible to one in better condition, whether it's a coin,
a Vintage toy, a rare record album, a book, or whatever..

No one can have an encyclopedic knowledge of _all_ fields of collectibles,
but I DO have an encyclopedic knowledge of some, and I use it to my
advantage when buying and selling..

So, I didn't get the lucky Monaco letter.. but maybe I can grab a set later
if someone will let us know when they put it up for sale, if there is any
advance notice.. Even if the Monnais de Paris puts up a couple hundred sets
in the middle of the night, I want to hear about it here..

Harv
