Default Andre Norton dead at 93

The author of the Witch World series left the Earth on Thursday, dead of
congestive heart failure, at her home in Murfreesboro, a Nashville suburb.

She was the first woman to receive the Grand Master Fantasy Award (in
1977). She also received the Nebula Grand Master Award in 1984. Science
Fiction Writers of America had recently instigated a Andre Norton Award
for best young adult fantasy or science fiction novel, but Ms. Norton did
not live to see the first one given (it begins in 2006).

She was generous enough to contribute to my first anthology, & she wrote a
very kind introduction to a collection of my poetry some years ago. Though
we never met face to face, living on opposite coasts, she was always kind
to me in letters, & there was an inate decency detectable in her science
fiction, which was among the earliest SF to regularly feature women &
minorities as protagonists. She was always encouraging of young writers &
was very sensitive toward young readers.

My grandmother worked for the Cleveland Public Library in the '30s & '40s,
and for a time she and Ms. Norton rode the same bus to work. According to
Grandma, "Alice" did a lot of writing during those commutes. Sorry to hear
she's gone.

Very sad...she introduced me to SF via the lucky discovery of an edition
of STAR MAN'S SON in my middle-school library. I am proud to have her
signature next to her picture in my copy of Faces of Science Fiction.

It must be admitted that she had a damned fine run, and her words will
resonate for a long time!
