Friend, if that nickel really has a buffalo on it, and the date is really 1909, that coin may be worth a king's ransom! As far as the numismatic world knows, the first Buffalo Nickel was minted in 1913. Larry 'wishing that I had one like yours' |

The buffalo series of nickels began production in 1913. You either have a Liberty nickel ( large Roman numeral "V" on reverse side) dated 1909 or a well worn 1919 or 1929 buffalo nickel. 1909 Liberty nickel, retail prices, likely to realize less when selling; Grade is good (basic design is outlined, no detail, letters and date readable) $2 Grade is VG (some detail in bust, some of "LIBERTY" in headband can be read) $2.50 Grade is Fine ( can read "LIBERTY", but not sharp & crisp) $5 Grade = Very Fine (VF) "LIBERTY" is sharp, considerable hair detail $14 Grade = Extremely Fine (EF or XF) very detailed, wear only on high points $30 Grade = almost uncirculated (AU) mint luster present, subtle signs of having been spent a few times $60 uncirculated (never spent or mishandled) $80 to $1,300 If the coin is a buffalo nickel, the price will also vary, depending on the level of preservation. If the date is easily misread as a 1909, I suspect heavy wear and figure fifty cents tops. Bill |
