Default Prices of 1884-CC vs. 1884-S Morgans

Hello,

I'm trying to figure out the logic in pricing the different grades of
these. The 1884-CC starts out at $95 in VF (PCGS price) as opposed to
merely $20 for 1884-S. This would make sense as there were only about
half as many CC as S minted that year. However, 1884-S rises crazily
between EF and AU to MS at some exponential rate, whereas CC seems to
rise at a very flat linear rate. At MS-60, CC only costs a fraction of
what the S mint costs. Is this perhaps due to early hoarding of CC
coins leading to a relative abundance of the higher grades?

I'm stumped (unfortunately, my Breen's hasn't arrived yet -- maybe
there is an adequate explanation there).

Thanks.

Bob,

You've answered your own question. It is because that people
tended to save CC coins at higher grades compared with the 1884-S.

Actually I think it was the Gummint that hoarded the CC coins for almost a
century after they were minted.

The majority of 84-CC Morgans sat in Treasury vaults until the 1970's
(IIRC about 85% of the original mintage was still in their original bags
until the GSA auctions). The vast majority of 84-S Morgans entered
circulation which is why the huge price discrepancy occurs at the AU
level.
