I have made dozens of sharp, high res scans of coins in slabs and most of the time the results are quite pleasing. The only difficulties I have are with circulated/brown copper coins. These scans seem to emphasize every piece of lint, micro-blemish, etc. that wouldn't otherwise show in a photo. |

I suppose I can fiddle with the settings or the software (I am using HP's packaged software, which isn't good at all) I don't think it's a software thing (the Epson software of my scanner is spartan, too!), I believe it's the inherent capability of the scanner, the way your scanner is scanning... I had a HP in the old days but I never took the results I took with my trusted Epson. I believe that Epson is still doing the best scaners (attention! CCDs!) so I believe you would be fine with the newer models, say the V350. PS The suggested VueScan software is excellent, give it a try if you think it's a software problem! If you still get the same results with VueScan, then it's definitely what I said, it's just...your scanner:-) -- E' mai possibile, oh porco di un cane, che le avventure in codesto reame debban risolversi tutte con grandi puttane! It's funny because I worked for Epson for many years. |

This was well before "photo" anything was out. It's a good company though and I have many many friends who still work there. I tried the software and it wasn't any better (to me) than what came with my HP but my HP, the scanning is really a secondary function. It scans non-slabbed just fine but the slab reflection is still there. Actually a little worse. Oh well. |

I have at last managed to give the trial Vuescan a go and it certainly works with my Epson 1640 scanner OK. I have not yet downloaded the full version, but intend to do so in the near future. The other half of my problem is now getting to grips with a new photo editing software. Previously I had a simple package that originally came with the scanner, but of course that will not load under Windows 7. Luckily with my new computer I ordered Photoshop Elements as well, so I am trying that out as well with the trial scanned images. Although more complex than my old software it seems to do everything I want. Thanks for all the advice. Peter |
