Default Sierra Leone ~for the rail enthusiast.

SG190a cancelled in 1946 on the TPO Freetown to Bo
http://cjoint.com/data/jxoU2eYFBu.htm

The TPO Sierra Leone
http://www.sierra-leone.org/Postcards/SL857897.jpg

Construction commenced from Freetown in 1896, and the first section of railway was
opened to Wellington (7 miles) by March 1897. Subsequent openings we

Waterloo, April 1898
Songo (32 miles/51.5 km) 1899
Rotifunk (56 miles/90.1 km) 1900
Bo (103 miles/165.8 km) 1903
Baiima (220 miles/354 km) 1905
Pendembu (227.5 miles/366 km) 1907

I also have a TPO Freetown to Pedembu.

The National rail was all narrow guage, and the rail system was entirely shut down 1974

Default Sierra Leone ~for the rail enthusiast.

Rodney

The postcard refers to British Railways ( ex-LMS ) "Jubilee" class
4-6-0 no 45627 Sierra Leone ( class built from 1934 onwards ).

Giving my age away, I remember as a teenager seeing these locomotives
in revenue service on the Liverpool-Newcastle expresses near my home
in Yorkshire.

The first locomotive was named "Silver Jubilee" to commemorate the
event ( in 1935 ) and the following few were named after Colonies and
Dominions until the names ran out, famous Naval Officers, battles and
warships followed.

FYI

45563 Australia
45564 New South Wales
45565 Victoria
45566 Queensland
45567 South Australia
45568 Western Australia
45569 Tasmania

Full of useless information aren't I ?

Malcolm

G'day all,
not useless information, Malcolm, right you be,
how could have that been Sierra Leone?
It was narrow guage, I posted the incorrect link,
I'll return later with the adjacent postcard, the rolling stock in SL
had "window shades" ?
I can see some latent "railway fanciers" on this NG,
I picked this book up for $1 at a car boot sale,
but confess I have yet to open it .

Ahah! lads, he is hooked. I started innocently too, and my railway
cover side collection is just nearing one thousand covers now.

Hah!
don't you even suggest that Blair, you Heliogabalus!
Forsooth, 'tis Travancore alone, that hath won my passion,
bucolic, yes, but unlike the soporific rail roadies, at least hath
some semblance of a beginning and an end.

Here, take this "railroad" and begone with you
http://cjoint.com/data/jye3ANHKU3.htm

(Hejaz, stucco work over entrance to Cairo railway station) Pshaw!

This may be better Malcolm,
the Caboose with (probably) the TPO section.

This is outrageous! what were they thinking?

(with a name like "impregnable" one can only guess what they did with their spare time)

What's more, I don't see a 'Barwani' in that list either.
