Default Confusing Printing Line

I have two copies of Byatt's "Posession" from Random House 1990. One
has the following printing line"

"897"

That appears to be straightforward. But, the other has the following:

"|468B9753"

That first character is the broken vertical line that you see on the
same key as your backslash. First of all, why the broken vertical
line? Second, what does the "B" signify in the middle of it all?

I think the pipe (aka broken bar) is probably not significant--some kind of
glitch.

The number line indicates a 13th printing. The original 2 to 9 number line
handles the first nine printings, along with the First Edition statement
indicating a first printing; thereafter, each new number line handles 10
printings (each new line begins with 0), and includes a letter--starting
with B, for printings 10 through 19.

Thank you, Jon. Once again, a simple, logical explanation.
