Since 9/11 tours and getting inside the mint is pretty much done. There is
a small trailer next to the mint called a gift shop. Don't expect anything
fabulous. Some real nonsense for sale. Better to order coins and medals
online. If you are walking distance drop by. If it requires time and
effort to get there, then I would not bother.

Next month I will be in Denver, CO for a short time. Does anybody here
know if the US Mint in that city has a museum, or maybe a store, that is
open to visitors?

Admittedly I do not have much time there; basically I would arrive at
the airport, get a car and leave. Also, I guess that guided tours of the
mint are not possible. But in case there are any other objects of
numismatic interest around there, I would certainly not mind the little
detour.

I have an idea ... see if you can gain access to the room where they
re-produce currency for the collector's market.

Maybe they'll let you buy an 1881 Morgan silver dollar fresh off their
presses, or even a sheet of uncut 1976 $2 star notes printed in 2004?

You can only get 1881-D Morgans in Denver. Your best bet is to get the Denver
mint fractional currency, hot off the presses. If you haven't seen the web-fed
minting machines, be sure to take the tour.

Thank you for all your tips and suggestions! Guess we will skip the
"mint detour" and simply drive up north from the airport then :-)

If you get a hotel just make sure you're not on the westside of the
freeway at the football stadium. Scumtown, gangsters and serious
trouble. Been there, done that. Never again.
