U.S. Sen. Harkin: Praises passage of act to honor national parks on quarters

HARKIN PRAISES PASSAGE OF ACT TO HONOR
NATIONAL PARKS ON QUARTERS

Legislation will keep jobs in the Cedar Rapids
area

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Senator Tom Harkin (D-IA)
today praised the passage of the America's
Beautiful National Parks Quarter Dollar Coin
Act of 2008. The bill will help keep jobs at
Cedar Rapids' PMX plant that were created in
2005 by increasing the production of $1 coins.

PMX produces the metal sheets that become dollar
coins, quarters, and dimes. The legislation,
which Senator Harkin strongly supports, must be
signed by the President before it becomes law.

"I am pleased that Congress passed the National
Parks Quarter Dollar Coin Act, which honors
national parks and sites in every state,"
Harkin said. "Not only will this bill keep
good-paying jobs in Cedar Rapids, but it will
also promote historical treasures in Iowa and
across the country."

The bill requires the quarters, which will
be issued beginning in 2010, to have images
of one national site from each state, the
District of Columbia and territories of the
U.S. The U.S. Treasury will produce five
quarter designs each year.

Just last week I snapped the last state quarter into my Dansco to complete
the collection. For ten years I had carefully sorted through dealers'
stocks at shows and in shops to find the most perfect specimen of each P and
D available. 100 years from now, that collection will be worth...$25.

Oh well, this will give me incentive to live another umpteen years, and
something numismatic to do in the interim. And, as the article suggests, it
will be good for Iowa.

I'll pass on collecting this boring boondoggle. It's the numismatic
equivalent of a bridge to nowhere.

This is a disaster. I wanted us to have normal quarters again after
this year. Not we have those stupi territory quarters for 2009, and
then "how" long with these National Park quarters, be released for?

Now, if they can do 50 (or whatever) different dollar coin designs and
100 different quarters, I see NO reason not to do my "Famous Dogs"
half dollar series. It might breathe at least a pinch of life back
into the half, even though not much, for circulation, but, there would
be collector demand for they coins. And I will continue to argue that,
if they can keep reesigning all of these damn coins, they can spend a
little more money to redesign the $1 and $2 bills, since we will
likely be stuck with them, a long time, if not forever.

Wonderful (NOT). Enough of this already Congress. There are too many
coins and too many designs. I guess I will vote with my wallet and just
stop buying all the sets I have been from the U.S. Mint. This program
is unwanted and unneeded. Next we will start issuing quarters for
sports teams, local politicians and anything else the Congress thinks
they can get payback for. I had really hoped to see a regular quarter
again after the Territorial Quarters program.

Perhaps this newest program will be such a money loser for the
Government that it will get canceled before it gets too far. I can only
hope and will do my part.

If this program was begun in 2006, as the article states, the pennies are
apparently being released secretly only in the counties they feature, with
the stipulation that they can only be distributed in change by local
businesses. To assemble the whole set, one will have to travel to each of
the 629 counties and shop at a local business to obtain examples. Or (gasp)
trade with other collectors. "Collect 'em ALL!!" I foresee still more
buffalos coming. A 21-page album should handle the complete set.

I assumed that we were never going to return to the better profile of
GW on the obverse in any case.

Just how quickly are quarters "used up", anyway?

I recall seeing a figure about two or three years ago that showed that the
state quarters program was making so many coins that the USMint could
completely stop making quarters on that date and not have to restart
production for 4.5 years - that was the Federal Reserve and Treasury 'vault'
supply on that date. That was the #2 supply of coins, timewise, with #1 being
half dollars (they have an undefinable time supply). Dollars were somewhat
low, only a year or two vault supply at that time.

As happened in Canada with their Twonies, look for demand on the USMint for
new quarters to drop a LOT once the $1 banknote to coin transition is (ever)
completed, too.
