Scott US Pocket Stamp Catalogue
How does this differ from a Scott Specialized, other than it size?

No details, basic listing of scott major numbers with photo of stamp,
catalogue values for mint and used. Nice for quick refernce and to take to shows for its size and I believe it has boxes beside the numbers to check off (or keep inventory) the stamps you already have. [soapbox please] In my early collecting days I carried a checklist to fill
holes in my collection, but in looking back I found I was not enjoying my purchases very long after they were mounted in the album. When I began collecting again (for the 3d time) I carried a small 3-ring loose-leaf binder (executive size they call them) to stamp shows. In it I carried photo copies of the relevant pages from the US specialized catalog along with various photo guides of the 'types' of the 1-cent, 10-cent, & etc.. This binder also had pocket pages to hold business cards. I would look over everyone's stock, taking notes on the back of their business cards of the items I was interested in. What I learned is that different dealers have different goals in mind. Once I had touched all the bases, so to speak, I began to feel more at home and rarely made a bad purchase afterwards. I think it was the renowned French Collector, Ferrari, who said he never wanted to exhibit his collections because dealers would find where the holes were, and once they knew these weaknesses he was forever hounded to buy those items at precariously high prices. Stamp shows are more fun through the process of discovery. When you are first starting out there is nothing wrong with carrying a list around with you. The pocket catalog can be very useful, but try to avoid revealing specifically what you are looking for and avoid buying the first item you find. Give the dealers a chance to show their wares. Also, never complain about prices if you are unknown to them. If the item costs more than a few dollars don't feel ashamed to make a few notes and thank the dealer profusely before moving on. The holes may not fill as quickly as you desire, but you will enjoy your purchases many times over every time you open your album. -a "R. Wilson" wrote in message ...
